hi! i recently lost my guinea pig to what i think was bloat (I'm not entirely sure as he died randomly and was only being lethargic beforehand while still eating and screaming). my other guinea pig stomach is hard, he’s also being lethargic whilst eating but not as much, he’s drinking and squeaking, but randomly became a lot more of a shell of himself (i know it comes in waves.) i can only get a vet appointment tomorrow as it’s 11pm and i have no way there. he’s eaten some lettuce but not all of it, the other one i recently got under a week is completely fine so i assume it’s nothing contagious. I'm just really looking for some advice as I'm terrified to lose him and dont think I'm going to be able to sleep tonight lol.
i’ve attached a photo, the dents in his fur are just from me feeling around his stomach.

I’m sorry to hear this

If you think he has bloat, please do not feed him any veg. Veg needs to be entirely removed from the diet until he is over bloat.
Please step in with syringe feeding a recovery feed and switch to daily weight checks so you can ensure you are feeding enough to keep his weight stable each day.
Feed a minimum of 40ml but ideally you neee to feed at least 60ml per 24 hours

I hope he is ok

he’s made it through the night luckily! i did remove some veg mainly because he just want to eat it last night, I'm booking an appointment today at the vet. he seems completely fine but i know how easy guinea pigs hide illnesses, and bloat comes in waves. hopefully everything will be sorted out and i won’t lose him too!

Please also keep him off the lawn, in case that was the cause for any bloating.

All the best for your vet trip. Please take him off any fresh food for the time being.

I weight both of them each morning and noticed nothing strange, they’re on the chunkier side so i am slowly trying to limit some of the food intake (i think they’ve been overfed slightly.)
I’ve stopped veg currently, and he’s an inside pig and I don’t let him ear grass in case it’s been treated.
Thank you all I hope the vet visit goes well!

So the vet went well, turns out there was no gut movement from what she could hear, but besides that he’s completely healthy. I’ve been given some meds and critical care for the next 7 days and he had an injection (i completely forgot what meds) and already seems to be eating now!

Please do keep up with the daily weight checks and syringe feeding regularly. No gut movement is very concerning and you need to keep syringe feeding very regularly - every two hours.

I hope he is ok

he’s doing really well! i’ve been super busy giving him medicine and keeping an eye on him. he’s taking really well to the meds so far and is just as greedy as he used to be! the vet suspected stress, so I'm trying to keep everything as stress free as possible, which is hard as I'm currently bonding him with another pig. he also LOVES the critical care, i have to keep cleaning him as he shoves his entire face into the bowl lol!
