blood from the rear - sow - updated - help please urgently

Hi all,

I know there is already a post on here about bleeding from the rear but my case is slightly different and i did'nt want to hijack someones thread!

Alice seems to have passed some blood. She's perfectly fine and happy and healthy otherwise, running around popcorning, eating and drinking regularly. She does'nt squeak when she pee's or exhibit any tell tale signs of illness at all except for the blood. I've been researching this evening and have figured out it his best to get her to the vets so he can check her over, From what i have read i'm thinking uti or bladder stones.

I was just wondering if this may have anything to do with a change in food? A few months back i had the same problem with another piggy after a food change and now after swapping food again this has happened. They are now having science selective and i hear this has a high calcium content and i'm wondering if this is connected? should i put them back on supa guinea excel? I posted about this when Wendy was poorly after the food change and got replies saying it was unlikely but now after it has happened again i'm really starting to wonder...

Has anyone had a similar problem? I introduced the new food slowly, mixing with their previous food for over 2 weeks...

Thanks for reading. Hope someone can help. 8...
I'm really praying my little sweetheart is going to be ok. She looks really well, I've checked for signs of cysts, she has no hair loss or crusty nipples or anything.

Oh love i'm sorry but i know nothing about little girls :red
For peace of mind i'd book her into the vets tomorrow xxxxxxxxx
Keep her warm and perhaps on towels so you can check to see if anymore blood is passed, have lots of veggie, hay and water for her as well xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Well done for noticing so quickly xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Best of luck all paws crossed for you both xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Aww thank you. She's on vet bed permanantly anyway so its easy to keep an eye out for any more blood. She has all she needs and a hubby to keep his eye on her through the night. Dermot dotes on her regardless of the fact she's not overly keen on him! ( she thinks she's human and finds piggies a little annoying! ). Fingers crossed the vet will says its something small and easy to treat. x

Just got back from the vets - he gave her a thorough check over and has decided 2ml of septrin daily and keep an eye on her. She was not a happy lady, she did look rather cute perched on his tiny scales though (with her tummy hanging over the edge!) :)) Fingers crossed the septrin will clear things up. she seems to quite like the medicine at least!

So sorry to hear about Alice Grommit, but you did the right thing getting her checked out. We have had a similar problem with one of our boars recently, he was diagnosed with a bladder stone which our vet has now removed.

Septrin seems to be the antibiotic of choice for bladder issues so hopefully this will do the trick. Did the vet recommend any pro-biotic to use whilst Alice is on the Septrin? Most vets seem to stock Bio Lapis which you mix with water and I usually offer this via syringe - you need to do this at a different time from the abs otherwise the Septrin will kill off any good bacteria! If Alice shows any signs of pain or discomfort when weeing/pooing I would get her back to the vets and ask for an x-ray to rule out stones. Fingers crossed she will be as right as rain before too long. Keep us posted.

Thank you. The vet did'nt give me any pro-biotic :(. Do you think she will be ok without? Wendy was fine last time on septrin without a pro-biotic.

Also Wendy and Alice are possibly related, they have similar markings and were from the same garden centre cage at the same time.. Do you think its a hereditory problem and they will keep getting these infections? Just worried it is something i am doing. :(

Also what are best greens to help with this kind of infection? Is there anything i should be avoiding? I always forget to ask the vet all these questions.

I sat up last night for an hour just watching Alice and she was'nt showing any signs of discomfort when weeing or pooping at all.

I have to admit that I have given antibiotics in the past without a pro-biotic, but that was before I found the forum! You could always give your vet a call and ask if they can put some by for you, the Bio Lapis sachets aren't very expensive or you can get some online. SPH Supplies do one called Avipro Plus (here's a link to the site http://www.sphsupplies.co.uk/index.php?cPath=14&osCsid=11a5c3a6d222d59662727e83de098380

I think the feeling is that bladder sludge/stones can be a genetic problem, it certainly seems to be the case with some of my gang i.e. father/son both had stones.:( Like you I started blaming myself and I have looked at all different ways to try to improve things for the piggies. I've switched dry food to a 50/50 mix of Cavy Cuisine (again SPH) and P@H pellets (Excel would be fine), I always give filtered water, lots of hay, both meadow hay and a handful of Orchard Grass. On the fresh food front I try to avoid foods that have a very high calcium content i.e. parsley, kale, in fact I give very little proper "greens". My lot have celery, a tiny amount of little gem lettuce, green beans, baby sweetcorn, peppers, a small amount of apple, a few slices of carrot, cucumber, melon if I have any and the odd baby tomato.

I'm not sure that diet has made a huge difference as one of my boars has recently had a stone, but I feel that at least I am trying to make a difference. My vet has sent away Curly's stone to have it analysed to see if this can shed any light on what is causing the problem.

Going back to your piggies, you could try offering unsweetened Cranberry juice as this helps to neutralise the urine (Sainsbury's stock Ocean Spray unsweetened in our area). Another trick is to boil up some pearl barley and offer them the strained off liquid, you can also mix in the cooked pearl barley with their food. Be warned it is very "slimy" to the feel and the pigs aren't keen, but again it helps to sooth the bladder as the liquid coats it.

Keep us posted and I will keep everything crossed for your girls.:)

You can sprinkle Bio Lapis or pro biotic on their food also. I used to do it with Joey. I knew even when he was eating very little that he would try to eat tomato or cucumber and that was very easy just to sprinkle onto.

Hope all goes well for Alice. You certainly did right taking her to the vet.

Thanks for all your help but things are even worse here now :-(
Just got home from a night out with friends to find more blood but different piggies. Wendy is bloated and there is blood in her cage. I've given her some infacol as this has helped with the bloat in the past but now i'm panicking. On checking her over i think she may have some slight hair loss on her tummy too. I feel awful, they are my little sunshines, i'm panicking i have done something wrong. please let them both be ok

Oh no love :(:(
all paws crossed that your darling little girls will be ok xx>>>xx>>>
Good luck at vets in morning, please let us know how it goes xx>>>xx>>>
COME ON WENDY AND ALICE xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I'm sorry to hear that your piggies are poorly, hoping they will feel better soon xx

oh i'm so sorry to hear that they aren't well
i suggest cleaning all the guinea pig houses out throughly and trying to keep the sick ones separate from the healthy ones
sorry but thats all i can think of
me, Nibbles and Nugget have our poors crossed for you and your piggies

Thank you all for your replies. Wendy is'nt bloated this morning and there is no blood in the cage so i'm going to see how she gets on today.

I wonder if they are having a reaction to some type of veg?

maybe they both have a tendancy for this to happen? very sorry to hear of it :(

Well all is well this morning, no blood in either cage since tuesday. :) They are both still popcorning about like crazy and eating and drinking well. Alice is such a good girl too, she happily laps her medicine from the syringe no problem at all. Dermot seems a little obsessed with cleaning her face when she gets back to her cage, he seems to like the smell of the medicine! :))

I think Wendy was the runt of the litter, she is consideravly smaller than Alice and since we got them she's the one who seems to pick up bugs and infections really easily. She's very feisty though! She seems to fight everything well bless her! x

That's wonderful news love PHEW.....huge sigh of relief for you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
awwwwwwwwwwww sending those beautiful girlies lots of healing wheeks and loves from us both, and Dukey sends extra special kisses for them xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Thank you glynis, the girls send dukey some kisses back, we hear he is poorly too, hope he's better soon x
