Hey guys,

Ginger has been fine since his op 12 days ago but today after i cleaned him out and came home from shopping there was some pee marks on the white bedding which was a light bloody colour kind of orange, i cleaned the cage up and we thought maybe he been bothering his stitches or something but just now i found more in his cage, with checked his stitches/op site both times and they seem to be fine not red or swollen.

The vet isn't there now but my mum will phone them in the morning to make a appointment as soon as they have one we can attend as i am at work till five and my mum is disabled and can't take him on her own.

I'm just confused because his mood hasn't changed at all, he's eating and drinking fine and he doesn't seem tired or run down either, in-fact he's seemed the happiest he's been since the op.

The piggies diet is, 4 days a week they get romaine lettuce, twice a week kale, once a week parsley with cucumber in the morning and in the evening they get bell pepper and carrot.

What do you think is wrong?

Is it their diet?

I'm really worried... :(

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like a urinery tract infection, does he sort of give little squeeks when has a wee? I say this as i noticed not long ago my woo doing the same! So i think he has a urine infection,so first thing in the morning I'm taking him to the vets,
Its a very good thing that you are taking your piggy to the vets also, especially when hes just had surgery...
No doubt some one who knows much more than me can help you with more info and what might be causing it as i do know there are other conditions like calcium build up etc that can do this, but i dont know enough to give advice...
But what i have said i hope it helps in some small way, also hope your piggy gets better real soon :)

Thank you,

He doesn't appear to be in any pain when he urinates, he doesn't squeak or hunch up or anything.

I have gave him some alfalfa hay over the last week because he lost a fair bit of weight after the op, maybe it had too much calcium in combined with his diet but i took it out of his hay rack this morning and gave him normal meadow hay i as too read up about the calcium build up.

I hope your guinea pig gets better soon too!

Best thing to do is get your piggy to the vets as you said you were going to do,as they will find out whats wrong with your piggy, thats what I'm doing tomorrow, its worrying when you see blood in there urine, woo squeeks abit when he wees but not all guinea pigs do,
I know hel proberly need antibiotics, i really hope your piggy gets better real soon and the vets find out whats wrong.....take care :)

We'll make an appointment in the morning and fingers crossed it won't be anything too serious...

Took Ginger to the vet,

The vet said it may just have been because of the calcium from the alfalfa hay i gave him last week after his op and he said to monitor him for the next couple of days as he doesn't want to put him on antibiotics after he's just had a dose from his op, he said if it had been going on over a couple of days and there had been bloody pee in his cage today then he would have put him on antibiotics. He said if ginger's behavior changes to bring him straight back or we find anymore blood, he gave us the emergency number.

So fingers crossed i won't find anymore, there hasn't been any sign of any last night and today but i will keep a close eye on him!

:hmm:

good to hear ginger went to the vets, but also that the blood has stopped in his urine, its a worry when you see that and no doubt your be watching him just incase it comes back,
i took both my piggies to the vets today as well, even tho it was wolly woo i was worried about i took cotton as well for his year check up,my dad was happy that i put both piggies into one big pet carrier so he didnt have to carry two of them,
cotton got the all clear but woo as thought has a urinary infection so is now on tasty banana medicine (septrin) and painkillers, I'm to bring him back in a weeks time if med etc dosnt help,so I'm nursing a poorly piggie.....
