Just noticed tonight that my 5 year old girl Daisy has some blood in her urine. Red/pink stain on the white fleece and I dipped a bit of kitchen roll in a fresh pee and it was bright red. She didn't squeak at all when passing urine and she is behaving normally. Eating and drinking as usual. I will take her to the vet tomorrow. I assume this will need treated with antibiotics?

It is most likely going to be treated as UTI when your vet has a look at it. if sympoms persist, get worse or if there are any indications that the reproductive system or the stones/sludge could be involved, then a scan or x-ray is indicated.

I have actually just realised it is my 4 Year old sow that is weeing blood. I witnessed it and also heard a few little squeaks. She is behaving normally too. Will see what the vet says!

Just back from the vet. I managed to get a sample from Maple around 40 Mins before the appointment so the vet dipped the urine and said it was medium-high in blood and high in protein. She gave her an examination and said she couldnt feel anything. She is going to further test the urine to see if there is bacteria or crystals in it and she will phone me later. Maple's urine isn't bright red anymore like it was yesterday, just tinged a little bit pink. My mum did a quick Google Search and found that blood and protein can indicate cystitis. Will wait and see what the vet comes back with.

Just off the phone to the vet. There was bacteria and sludge in the urine. She wants to start antibiotics and suggested Baytril. I asked for septrin but she wasn't too sure about it until another vet said there is an antibiotic licensed for rabbits called sulphatrim (unsure on spelling) has anyone used this before?

Oh bless, the fact that she is behaving normally might mean you have caught it nice and early. I hope the antibiotics clear it up quickly for her and she feels much better soon

OK so Maple has now been on antibiotics for 10 days and there is still bright red blood in her urine. It hasn't been bright red everyday but today it is. I am going to call the vet. Anyone got any ideas as to what it could be?

Thanks.

No idea what it could be, but sending tons of healing vibes to Maple.

Was it Baytril or did they go for Septrin in the end?

Sometimes it can take a while for a stubborn UTI to respond, or it may be a switch of antibiotics is needed. Is she squeaky peeing? Would your vet agree to an xray or ultrasound to rule out stones or sludge?

She is on septrin. I'm still waiting for the vets phonecall but they did say last time that we may need a scan to rule out stones so I assume that will be next. Am I right in saying if she needed an X-ray it would only be under a whiff of gas and not full GA? Same with ultrasound? I have not heard her squeaking so to be honest don't think it's actually bothering her that much. Probably bothering me more haha. She is also on metacam.

Thanks a lot.

Xray yes usually, scan, not that I know of, one of my sows had a scan just before Christmas and was awake for it.

Ultrasound is usually done conscious. Xrays can be done conscious but some vets use a whiff of gas just to make sure they can get the view they need. It depends on the pig and how wriggly they are.

The vet wants to X-ray. I said I didn't want her under full GA and she said they could use gas and air. Maple is not a wriggly pig at all so would most likely sit still but she said they need a view of her lying on her back. She quoted me around £100, is this a suitable price for g.pig X-ray?

Thanks.

I think we did pay around £70 for an x-ray but it was a few years ago. We have had ones done with gas and all has been okay afterwards. Sending Maple lots of love x

Ours charges less but I know they are quite cheap. I understand what they are saying as they need a specific view for the bladder.

Maple is booked in for her X-ray tomorrow morning. I'm feeling rather nervous! For those with experience in X-ray's, do you think they will be able to put Maple on her back just using gas? I really don't want anything intravenously as it worries me! Also, how is it possible to do a conscious X-ray and get the pig in their back? Maybe I am just over thinking things :/

How did it go?
Well the vet decided not to X-ray today as she wanted to test another sample of urine which surprisingly had no blood or protein in it! In the beginning it was full of bacteria but today she said there was 2 tiny bits of bacteria so we are continuing the septrin for another week as looks like it is working!

That's good news, if you do have to Xray don't worry about the gas they recover very well normally.

Obviously it's better for the piggy and your bank balance if it is just a stubborn UTI.
