Hi. I went into the piggy room a few minutes ago to find red spots all around the cage :( I checked Min's privates as I took her to the vets a week or two ago suspecting a cyst, but came home with a clear diagnosis. I found red coating and I'm not sure what to do. About to weigh her to see if there's been a plunge or something. Is it possibly for piggies to have red in their urine if they've ate red bell pepper recently? Not using this as an excuse as I can't remember what colour pepper I fed yesterday. My family have been having a bad few weeks recently concerning money and I've used up the last of my own vet money recently :( I'm not sure what to do

I agree that its too red to be caused by food.

Its more than likely a urine infection which is easily treated with antibiotics. The vet will usually express some urine and check it on a dipstick, then send you home with antibiotics if theres infection.

If you cant get there till tomorrow, as long as she is definately still passing a normal amount of urine regularly then she will be fine until tomorrow.

In the meantime, offer her some extra cucumber to help keep her bladder flushing regularly.

Any reduction of urine output or complete inability to urinate despite straining will warrant an emergency appointment.

All the best x

Thanks for your replies x Had Min out for a while. She drank, pooped and moved fine but didn't (possibly) pee until back into the cage. However, I was waiting for her to but had to pop out of the room for two minutes. With my luck, I went back to see fresh pee on the wood shavings, but no clue who had done it :(

Also, has anyone been to the beccles road (gorleston) vets? My family is getting tired of going far for a good vets so often, and Haven isn't going to be considered as I've had bad experiences with them before. I've only been to the beccles road vets twice before (one for piggy claws to be cut, second for hamster to be pts, rip) and so I am unsure. Have had two good reviews from two neighbours, but this was for their dogs. Unfortunately money isn't good rn so I'm trying to be careful not to get ripped off by a non-savvy vets.

Rn I'm having a bit of trouble getting to talk to the vets, and I'm very unsure what vet I should ring in case of misdiagnosis. I've already lost Teddy this year and greatly fear losing her. Is it ok for me to take her into vets tomorrow? Roughly during the hours four to six as I don't get home early anymore. I'm worried as I don't have a clue how quick things like this develops

Looks very undiluted , could be a stone. In her urether that is casing bleeding! Have you examined her vulva (wee opening ) for signs of a urerther sone , sometimes they lodge in the neck on the vulva ,
NB only extract a uretha stone if it is obviously free and will cause no damage

Thanks! I didn't think of that. Is a stone very easy to see if it's lodged there? Not a clue what it looks like

Sorry for double post. Rang the beccles road vet, don't advise going there for a piggy. They told me it wasn't likely to be a stone or infection and they weren't sure what it could be, but said it shouldn't be serious if she is still moving.

Rang Taverham a minute later. They told me it sounded like an infection, but shouldn't be life threatening (speaking of which, are stones and infections life threatening? sorry for silly questions), told me to get an appointment tomorrow. Not sure how I'm going to do this :( Mum hates driving more than thirty minutes, and Taverham is a forty to a hour + drive. Also, I'm at school at eight thirty am and on bus in morning by seven twenty. I don't get home until roughly five to half five in the afternoon unless someone picks me up, so I really really hope they do later appointments. Feel a mess right now

As long as she can still pass urine i would say its more than likely just a UTI.. And in the worst case scenario that its a stone, the fact she can still urinate means there is no blockage at the moment.

Unless she starts to strain and fail to pass urine, then she will be fine until tomorrow.

My pig has interstitial cystitis, its chronic inflammation of the bladder and this is what she produced at her last flare-

It can be alarming but the fact she can still wee is the most inportant thing.

Good luck tomorrow x

Nearly seven am, just checked her. She's gone up from 900g to 1100g overnight. Could it possible I over fed her and is this safe for her to go up so quick? Ginny is also gone up by a hundred grams. Hopefully scales aren't broken.

Thats a pretty extreme increase.. Please make sure she is urinating and that this isnt the cause of the weight gain.

As mentioned above, any blockage of urine would be an emergency.

All the best for today x

Hi! Just weighed Min, still at 1100g. She was taken to vets at 2:30pm today :) I was at school, but mum was nice enough to take her to Taverham. Ginny also came for the ride and was told by vets he looked ok. Min was diagnosed with an infection and given 5.00 x Baytril 2.5% oral to be taken twice a day for seven days and Metacam once daily for five days. Does this sounds right? Also a bit confused as the Metacam says for cats

The Metacam is okay for guinea pigs. There are very few medicines actually licensed for pigs. Every time I take my boy for his check up and repeat prescription I have to sign a waiver form saying I want the meds even though they're not for guinea pigs.

Thanks! Would the baytril be ok too?

Also, as there's two piggies in the cage, I'm still not 100% certain as to who it could actualy be who has it, though I'm very certain it's Min. Other than blood, as I haven't seen that recently, would there be anything else to look for?

Baytril is one of the few med's that are licenced for pigs. That's one of the reasons why vets that aren't experienced in pigs tend to prescribe it for pretty much everything.

Sometimes other signs that they show will be hunching when peeing, straining, or squeaking.

Having a bit of a dilemma lol. . Haven't seen blood in the cage for one or two days. Separated Min and Ginny rn and they've both peed but no blood. I took a bit fresh bit of each side out to look at in the light and can not really see anything, save for a few specks but can't tell if that's the light or just generally how the wood shavings are. I swore I saw blood on Min's privates though when I first looked at her after seeing blood in cage.

Out of curiosity, does something really bad happen if I give a piggy who doesn't have an UTI medication? I haven't given Min any medication yet as I've been unsure but I'm 98% sure it is her. I only have one water bottle right now as the other one went weird so can't keep them apart for the whole night.

Still haven't found out who it is :( Hasn't been any new spots of blood for since Monday. Vet recommended splitting them up but as there's no blood that doesn't seem very useful. Would I be bad to go out tomorrow w some friends? Not sure how to say I can't really go. There's still people at home to keep an eye on them but I'd feel like a horrible piggy slave to leave

If the people keeping an eye on them would be able to deal with any problems that arise, go out! The pigs won't be mad- they love you always.
If you sit home and do nothing but stress you'll make it worse. Go out, and try and relax. Godfrey and Duncan Medical Services Ltd say relaxation helps all. And infinite veggies are vital. Good luck!

Thank you a lot :) It's been a stressful few days and have only gone out if I really needed to
