Tonight I noticed patches of red on the bedding in the hutch (we use fitch bedding). I have just watched Lily do a wee and her urine was a bit red. She is prone to cystitis when stressed and when she has that she squeaks when she goes to the toilet, but she hasn't been doing that lately. She seems very well in herself and full of energy. I give her Vitakraft pellets which contain beetroot. Is that likely to cause red urine? I just thought I better check before I take her to the vets. Thanks.

I've never actually given my piggies beetroot related products, but I would assume that would make a difference in urine colour. Maybe you could stop the pellets for a day or two and monitor or speak to the vet over the phone to hear their opinion. How long has she been on the Vitakraft for? If it's been a while with no red urine, I would suspect that it's to do with something else.

Possibly the food...

Do you have any dipsticks in, you can test the wee for the presence of blood it can then be indicative of a uti etc....

No crying, when weeing/pooing?

There's no crying at all when weeing or pooing. I have some urine test strips, but I probably won't be able to use them until the morning, as I have just bonded her with another pig and they are having their first night together in the hutch, so I don't want to disturb them. There's a lot of bickering at the moment.

She's being having Vitakraft since April, but I have only just recently started using Fitch bedding, which is white. I noticed some pink marks last week, but I thought it was from red pepper. If I was using fleece, i wouldn't have noticed there was anything wrong with her urine, as she isn't crying whilst going to the toilet.

They don't always cry with chronic cystitis, in my experience it is more common for them not to get much obvious pain, but when the vet examines them they are usually tender over the bladder

Thank you. I will ring the vets first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, I don't think the Exotics vet is working until Friday. Do you think she will need an ultrasound? She last had one in April which determined that she had cystitis, as the vet couldn't see anything wrong.

I've just seen her going to the toilet again and her urine was red. There's quite a few patches of red on the bedding now so I think it must be blood, as it's never been like this before. The bonding must have really stressed her out, the poor little thing.

Poor angel, I would think the vet would treat for cystitis first, is she usually put on antibiotics?

Off topic, but which Vitakraft do you feed? I used to feed the Emotion prebiotic but it was discontinued.

She has never been given antibiotics before, only Loxicom. Do you think I should give her some Loxicom tonight?

I have the Vitakraft Emotion Prebiotic. It's really annoying that it's been discontinued, it took my pigs about three months to get used to it.

A feel of the bladder and a urine dipstick test by the vet will give you an answer, she shouldn't need an ultrasound as she's so well in herself.

I have a sow with interstitial cystitis, she used to squeak when peeing during a flare at the beginning but didn't do it for the next 10 or so flare ups.

Hope the vet can give you an answer soon x

Assuming she is over 4 months old and over 800gs it wouldn't hurt to give her 0.3 of the loxicom / metacam .
