Advise please,
Smoke wouldn’t come out his tunnel yesterday there was a lot of white on his fleece and a spot of blood. I put him on the floor and he had blood in his urine. I took him straight to the vet she gave him antibiotics and she told me to keep an eye on him as he is really alert. When I hug him he wants to jump up for lots of hugs. He is eating but not drinking so I’m syringing him water. I’ve noticed that he is not really possibly ping now though. What do you think?

Hi!

If your piggy is getting plenty of veg, he will not need any extra water. Please do not force any water down him that he is not willing to take at this stage! Please make sure that you do not overfeed veg and rather keep his water bottle clean and refilled with cool and fresh filtered or low calcium bottle water.
Long Term Balanced General And Special Needs Guinea Pig Diets

As long as he is still eating, his guts and urinary tract are both OK - a piggy will only eat when the other end is still working. A blocked bladder is becoming extremely painful very quickly; your piggy will be looking REALLY off very fast. The same goes for a blockage in the guts. He will pee and poo in his own time; it doesn't happen like clock work. He will also hold his pee in as much as possible if you hover over him or expect him to do where he doesn't feel comfortable. ;)

Please continue the course of (I assume) baytril. Contact your vet if it causes loss of appetite or if any symptoms don't start coming down after 3-7 days or are getting worse during this time.
Step in with syringe feed asap if there is loss of appetite. Weigh daily at the same time to monitor the food intake. over 80% pf the daily food intake should be hay. You can't control that by eye.
There are several potential urinary tract problem that present with the same symptoms. Any vet will firstly treat for UTI (bacterial urine infection), then do a scan/x-ray if that is not working and look further afield when either hasn't brought any answers.

He had antibiotics and has not passed blood all week. However tonight he has started peeing with blood for the last two hours. I called the vet he can't fit him in until tomorrow. I have made him a make shift hospital in my bedroom as I'm too scared that he will get ill quick. Am I over reacting as I've set an alarm for every two hours to check on him.

Please take a DEEP breath! You are overreacting; it is not a life and death emergency, just something that should not be left until the end of the course of antibiotics.

Having him seen tomorrow during regular hours is perfectly OK.

OK haha Just see blood and panic. So many of the threads say that it is urgent to get medical help so it makes you panic. I lost a guinea pig in the heat a few weeks ago and feel so guilty, I don't want to loose another one.

You are always more trigger-happy after a death or serious injury.

When you have time, have a snoop around our extensive guides section, which you can best access via the shortcut on the top bar. You may find it very interesting and helpful!
Here are the two relevant medical guides:

Smoke got better and is now off his food again but this time he isn’t eating much hay. His poop is threads (see photo). Went to the vets but Smoke wouldn’t let the vet check his teeth. He wanted to sedate him but I said I would rather check his gut first. They gave him steroid injection and told me to syringe him nuggets and water three times a day. He has lost weight but I think with the time of food it must be more than teeth? Do you agree? I’m going to keep weighing him and go back if it doesn’t work. Have I done the right thing?

You are not over reacting. Your reaction is spot on with a guinea pig.Just dont panic. Although i can hardly talk

Did I do the right thing by not asking for the sedation and waiting for the steroids to work?

@Wiebke I thought guinea pigs were not supposed to have steroids. Just a bit concerned if this is right and the poor piggy has been given them.

I’ve given him cc every two hours throughout the night (mixed with Apple juice) and he is still loosing weight and only done 4 small pops since yesterday. His tummy is getting harder he did eat a tiny bit of his romaine lettuce a min ago. He’s gone from 1.1kg yesterday am to 960 now. What else can I do?

I think you need to see a piggy savvy vet. If you are in UK you can find recommended vets on the list on this forum (sorry I don't know how to include a link) if you are in the US I believe guinealynx had a list.

If his tummy is hard try giving 1ml of infacol u can get it at tesco or wilko. And gripe water 1ml. Also buscopan is good the gold and green packet. Give 1 tablet crushed into the back of a 1ml syringe then suck up the water.i done this and it worked twice with hard tummy. I did all 3 together. My vet said it was safe

I don’t think he is going to make it 😢 Went to the vets yesterday again the sedated him to check his teeth. He pooped under anisthetic. They didn’t see anything wrong. He came home drank lots water, had a bit to eat, pooped a bit. This morning he has gone lethargic, stopped eating and drinking. Started him on critical care straight away. Called the vet and went to emergency. He’s now dehydrated so they gave him water under the skin. They don’t think he’s going to make it. He’s on Zantac, and Baytric. I’m syringe feeding him water and CC. I’m so upset 😢

Oh bless you, I’ve got everything crossed for your little man xx

I would still continue with trying to syringe feed him, very little amounts at a time if he’s struggling. If he won’t take any or if he is not able to swallow it then unfortunately his body is shutting down.Keeping you both in my thoughts xx

How's he doing @SmAsh ? Any news from the vet? It sounds like a digestive issue, possibly bloat so he's in the best place at the vet.

Try not to worry ( I know it's easier said than done) but you did what was right and he'll be getting all the meds he needs now.

They didn’t keep him in. I don’t know what to do he will still allow me to syringe him water and food. But he’s whimpering and I’m so worried he’s in pain

So sorry you are in this horrible situation. You are doing your best for your piggy and that us all you can do. If he makes it through, do try and find a piggy savvy vet as soon as you can. Thinking of you and sending healing thoughts.

If he’s still swallowing that is a good sign.Try syringing 0.2mls at a time. You may have to syringe through the night too.Is he eating anything by himself? A piggy that is completely off food needs about 120ml a day to keep them going.Whereabouts are you located? x

No nothing on his own. He’s really fighting me syringing him the CC now. He’s getting worse. I’ve called vet for advice. He hasn’t had a pee or pop now on 24hours

The poo output reflects the last 48 hours. Please keep syringe feeding him.If he’s fighting then he still has some strength which is a good sign. Are you in the uk? We might be able to recommend a knowledgeable vet x

The vet said they can give him some morphine type pain relief. I’m in the Uk in Bournemouth

Keep syringing food. I have had a pig with pneumonia on deaths door and he pulled through. When they have given up they tend to just dribble out the critical care

I hope you are right. They examined him again and can’t find anything wrong. He didn’t squeal in pain at all so they didn’t give him pain killers. They did give him more liquid under the skin. I’m struggling but I managed to get about 4m CC in (it took me an hour). It was easy before but now he’s resisting. I will try every two hours throughout the night. They said if he doesn’t start eating tomorrow they should put him down 😢

When you say resisting. What do you mean, like just turning his head away or spitting it out?

To me because you said hes peeing blood and white stuff it could be a stone in the bladder or an infection of the bladder. I would stop the steroids and go and ask for zythromax antibiotics, its strong and would knock out any infection if there is one. The only way is up. I would try that
