Just putting back my pigs and found a piece of Carefresh in their cage that looked like it had been wet and then dried pinkish. I'm wondering if this could be blood in someone's urine... but when my hedgehog had bloody urine it dried brown. Just wondering if anyone has insight into odd urine colours... I may have to put in white Carefresh to see more clearly. No one shows signs of a UTI- no squeaking while peeing, etc. What would dried bloody urine look like on brown paper?

I can't be sure, but would have thought it would have dried darker. However been neurotic I would probably pop them on a white cloth and watch them wee just to check. Hope they are ok x

I had a pee panic a few months ago when I found a big splash of blood in the hutch. To this day I don't know where it came from though and I've never found anything since rolleyes

I took each pig out at a time and sat them on my lap on a white towel and fed them cucumber until they peed. Thankfully all pee was clear and nobody cried out. I did this three times just to be certain.

Hopefully your little ones will be the same.

Just a thought... Their pee could be pinkish if they've eaten beetroot?

Urine can sometimes change colour as it dries (and some foods, e.g. gerty with colurants, carrots etc can cause colour changes too), so if you are looking for blood, it needs to be "fresh" urine - i.e. still wet. The best way to test is to get a urine sample done as guinea pigs can have trace amounts of blood in their urine without it showing up to the naked eye.

However, if it is just a one off and you haven't noticed any wounds or crying when going to the toilet, then I wouldn't worry too much at this stage, just keep a close eye over the next few days and go to the vets if you become concerned.

Thanks- I am going to keep a close eye and report to the vet if I see more discoloration! They haven't been eating beetroot, but have had carrots and strawberries in the past couple days. I have to buy more Carefresh anyhow,I think I may splurge and buy the white colour instead of the brown because that will make it easier to determine what is going on too! Thanks for the advice... I'll keep you posted!

I think I figured it out! For snacktime yesterday I gave the girls spring mix that contains that purple lettuce... one of them always ends up coated with 'lettuce juice' when she eats spring mix, it ends up all down her chin. The splotch was over by the water bottle... I'm thinking she ate her lettuce, drank some water (which she is also sloppy at!) and the resulting 'drippage' made a pinky/purply splotch. But I am still going to keep a close eye on them just to be sure, and give a different snack to eliminate that as a factor!
