I live in Scampton village, famous for the Dambust
I feel bad that I've only just noticed this a have been out all evening taking my daughter to her gymnastics club.
Fed the girls their supper and noticed what looked like one of the girls had weed on the edge of the pigloo blood? checked them all over for cuts etc and picked Bright Eyes up and her front bottom has blood? on it :(
I did a kitchen towel test and it dried a pale brown.
They all had some red pepper this morning, but i'm sure it can't be that as why would it just be Bright Eyes that has red wee?
Anybody? :( I will take her to the vets in the morning if she is still like it as she has probably got an infection or something :(
I took some pictures for your opinions.

Does look worrying never had wee quite that colour from red pepper before. I would take her to the vets in the morning if I was you. Make sure she gets lots of fluid in the meantime. Big hugs to you and Bright eyes x

Thank you for your reply. I keep checking on her to see if I can hear her squeaking, she has got tucked up in the bedroom to sleep at the moment :) I will stop up a while to keep an eye on her. I've just put in some melon, cucumber and they have fresh water in the bowl and she has been eating and drinking independantly :)

That looks worrying... bertie had a URI and it started with red jelly on his 'bits' and then just blood. It's not washed off the vetbed, though. Well, it drained quickly into the base, which made it difficult to spot but once I changed the litter, there was no mistake to be made.

a week's antibio and he was fine. Actually the bleeding stopped after 24hrs of meds.

I'm joining some pics for comparison in a mo

Hope its nothing serious, I would take her to the vet too. Mine sometimes wee a reddish colour after red pepper but not as red as that xx

I should add that Bertie used to drink a LOT, so that's why there's seems to be so much of it...:(

Blimey that's so much blood - it's rather obvious too isn't it. I've just lifted the lid up to the bedroom and she came trotting out clucking like a chicken as if to say you have just woken me up mum, and off she clucked back in the bedroom - I can't see anything in the bedroom on the vet bed yet. I'm sure Bright Eyes thinks she is a chicken :))
In the morning I will put her in an empty carrier until she wees and syringe it up and take it with me for testing at the vets.
What antibiotics did Bertie have for his UTI?

Hope she is ok. Does look more than just a problem caused by veg. I've only known carrot and beetroot to do this, it would have to be a hell of a lot of red pepper to cause that much redness.

Good luck, keep us posted. x

Are you sure it is blood in the urine?
It is probably inaccurate photo colour but it looks rather pink for blood. I would go so far as to say that on the first and last photos it looks carrot coloured!

No, I'm not sure! hence the post. Just seems odd that I tend to give my girls pepper in their mix of veg for the vit c and never seen any of the girls wee this colour. I will take Bright Eyes and a morning urine sample for testing this morning otherwise I will worry about her and feel bad if I don't do anything :)

Baytril cos that's all my vets have ever given me. But people here may be able to advise somothing else.

The discoloration was probs due to him drinking so much water with the growth on his kidney, but from his 'end' it was unmistakbly blood...

SORRY quoted wrong person... My brain is on strike - bl**dy French!

Milky white is normal, drying white and sludgy/gritty indicates significant excess calcium. :)
It does look like blood to me, TR. One of my sows with a UTI had "intermittent" bloody urine e.g. she's be fine for five or six pees, then she's have a couple with blood, then fine again etc. She was given Marbocyl, which cleared it up ok, but Septrin is far better, more effective in a shorter space of time.

thanks Laura you actually just stopped me worrying about smokey who's wee looks like that it doesnt dry like that though, xxxxx

When my Llewelyn came down with cystitis on Good Friday, he had reddish pees among normal coloured ones. I took a sample to have it analised, but it didn't show up blood, however!

If you sit him on a bit of hay, and the hay goes a brilliant yellow, is a first indicator for me for possible UTI. Another sign is increased thirst, as has been mentioned.

I would second, however, that you see a vet and have it checked out! If there is any indication of UTI make sure he has a quick x-ray (no need for anaesthesia) to check for crystals or Bladder stones as the possible cause for an infection.

I wish you all the best!

Well we are back from the vets. Bright Eyes has blood and protein in her urine, the vet prescribed Baytril "surprise, surprise" I did ask about Septrin and she said that Baytril is usually effective for UTI's. I felt rather uncomfortable asking :red she said if the symptoms persist after a weeks course then I should bring her back. In the meantime, I am waiting for her to phone with the microscopy results from the urine sample and depending on the results Bright Eyes may need an x-ray to see if it is stones.
All in all, I hated going to the vets, it had to be the vet that had a lot to do with us losing Snoopy bunny 8... There is one really nice vet who saw my Peggy pig, but she wasn't on shift :( Oh and I had to ask for probiotics. I have been given protexin, one seventh of a 5g sachet with food per day - that should be fun to measure out rolleyes
I sometimes wonder if vets just go through a process of elimination and don't always know straightaway what to diagnose or what treatment to give. I think I'm going to have to go on a Rodentologist course cos I'm so B****Y cheesed of with vets who aren't that clued up about little animals.

I'm sorry you had a bad vet experience unfortunantly they are all to common and i agree with you,I'm thinking of training to be a rodentologist just because I'm sick of incompetent vets that cannot help my babies,i hope everything goes well and the results are good xxxxxxx

So sorry you got the wrong vet! Some of them can be a REAL pain. Better try and book for another one when you go back.

Sending all my vibes to poor Bright Eyes and keeping my fingers firmly crossed that it's not bladder problems!

Wiebke xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Just got the microscopy results and the vet said that there was a small amount of crystals, but only what they expect to see in guinea pig urine, no calcium deposits. However, she did say that this does not nessecarily mean it rules out the possibility of a stone :{ I feel a bit confused now, dosen't take much :) Anyway, I am to continue with the antibiotic therapy and keep an eye on her and the vet will see her in 7 days. I don't feel quite so upset as I was earlier. I think it was just the shock of going into the vets as I unfortunately have had two beloved bunnies die recently and it just brings all the sadness back :( I know I had a rant about the vet, I think it's cos when you are upset about your piggies, bunnies you look for someone to blame especially when they die :( I am sad now cos I've got myself so upset with worry, I don't think I can bear to lose another of my babies 8... I think I'm hormonal too which dosen't help 8...

Plenty of fluids will flush the bladder out well. Cranberry juice may be beneficial as well. Give as much as she will take of either, though the ideal amount to flush the bladder out is 40ml water in a day.

the vagueness in vets' answers only serves to cover their backs as they generally haven't got clue... in case they were wrong...

Cor blimey, I sound like AP!:)) who I'm sure will agree with the above statement, though.rolleyes

I read the first line of your post and was about to pm you...then I read the second line!!!
I have been "warned" again about some of my comments. It is ironic to read the anti-vet comments that have been made by others in the last couple of days, far more drastic than anything I have said.
I had thought about leaving the forum............give chance for the applause and cheering to fade away........however, I shall stay, at least for the time being, knowing that some others share some of my views.
Isn't the silence of disappointment deafening?
Occasionally Peter Gurney would send me copies of letters he had written to the RCVS "commenting" about veterinary treatment of guinea pigs.
I thought I tended to being outspoken, he would have been banished from the forum permanently!

Note from admin

Whilst it is appreciated that 'some' vets are rather lacking in their knowledge of guinea pigs, it's the sweeping statements, that would suggest that 'all' vets are the same, that I cannot, and will not, accept on this forum.
