Bloody Urine

I have read the guide on the urine and stones and there isn’t much I can do now but…

Does this look like bloody urine to everyone? I’ve been dealing with some major burnout so changed the pigs over to pee pads today as part of their bedding. Previously I had just dark grey pads…came upstairs a few hours later to find these blood spots. Unfortunately not something I could have seen on the gray pads but with 3 girls in the cage I still need to determine who. My best guess is the youngest pig, they were mostly in her hiding spots. So with my best judgement I split the cage so I could monitor just her side (and the other) for more blood. She can still see, hear and sniff her sisters but they are of course a little upset with the change.

It’s is a holiday here in the USA tomorrow (Monday), all the vets offices are closed. I will be calling around first thing on Tuesday to get her in. All of the girls are acting totally normal, they live in my room right next to my bed and I haven’t heard any squealing while peeing or noticed a decrease in appetite or water intake. Everything was completely normal which is why I am totally shell shocked and feeling completely guilty. If they show changes I’ll drive them the couple hours to the only exotic emergency vet. I did check everyone’s bum for staining or injury! They all appear fine. Some of the lighter pees in the pictures could be from another pig.

I am praying hard for something simple such as a UTI, I spent most of my savings fixing hay poke in two of the pigs eyes a few months ago and I haven’t financially recovered yet please send Tinsel, and all my girls healthy vibes!

I hope your piggy gets better soon The vet might be able to feel if there are stones. It is tricky finding out which piggy is producing the coloured urine. Getting a urine sample from each if possible would be good too, but might be difficult. They might go in a carrier, especially after eating cucumber or Romaine.

Thank you! When I call I’ll ask if they can check all 3! My girls rarely pee in their carrier? It’s like odd but I can try!

The dark red/purplish shading rather points strongly towards porphyrin in my own experience. Blood may or may not be contained but it looks very characteristic for a sterile cystitis flare.

Thank you! I want to try and get her into my favorite exotic vet just for this reason…it could go a couple different ways. It’s definitely just the one little girl so I will call them first thing Tuesday!

Update: I was able to get Tinsel into the vet on Tuesday! The ended up having me drop her off at 9am and kept her til 5:30pm…waiting to have a chance to see her and for her to pee! They did an x-ray, no bladder stones. They did an in house urinalysis under the microscope and saw nothing. So they sent a urine sample out and we are waiting for results. If I had to guess sterile cystitis is where we will end up but of course things need to be ruled out. Since she was behaving normally they decided to hold pain meds or any other meds for now…although it was noted she didn’t have bloody urine just discolored!

I guess she didn’t “purr” for them all day she was there despite a lot of techs loving on her. My mom had to pick her up and when they put my voice on speaker she immediately started! I know it’s cause I’m veggie lady but it was all very sweet! Her sisters were happy to have her back too!
