Last night when I put their dinner salads in the cage, Blossom wasn’t wheeking at the bars, Instead I found her passed away. She was down in between the hay tray and the side of the cage. I’m worried she got stuck there which caused her death, All of my pigs can back up out of that spot, or spin around up on their back legs to face back the right way. But Blossom was slightly disabled, her back legs didn’t work normally after her having a stoke (supposedly) a year or so ago. But she still got around perfectly, just with a wobble. So I really really hope she didn’t get stuck there which caused her to die? There was a few poos and she was also a bit wet.

I had cleaned them out in the morning, She seemed herself and I’m sure I saw her in the hay tray in the afternoon. So she couldn’t have been down there all day.
I had noticed for a couple of days before hand that she was sitting around in the corner of the cage occasionally, fluffed up. I thought she was perhaps feeling off or just feeling the cold weather. But then later she’d be wheeking for food and doodling around as normal so I didn’t think too much of it. So I’m hoping she just found that spot beside the hay tray when she suddenly must have had a bad turn and choose that spot to die.
..It’s that spot on the left.. what do you think?

Whatever happened, Blossom was 7.5 years old. Which was a remarkable age considering her start in life. Blossom is the very last of the pigs me and my friend rescued in November 2018 from a hexagon bird aviary full of g’pigs (and birds). In-breeding, dirty, full of mites, malnourished, only fed on carrots and what ever the birds dropped. Blossom lived with my friend and their guineas up until she was their last piggie, so just 6 months ago she came to live with me after my Olive died (Blossoms family member in the aviary) leaving Newton without a wife.
Newton was delighted to welcome Blossom as his new wiflet, Being SO similar to Olive in size, colour and character he must have thought Olive had come back to life! The only difference was Blossoms disability, She had a stroke a year or so ago (with my friends) -that’s what the vet thinks anyway. causing her to walk with a wobble, It’s like her hips weren’t quite right or something. When I adopted her from my friend she was also suffering from a skin issue, and felt a bit skinny. After a couple of months with me and Newton, Blossom was looking much healthier, her coat was lovely, she looked plumper and her walking also massively improved.
Blossom tapped her teeth on the water bowl making a little tune when she drank..which is exactly what Olive did. And I’ve had no other pig do that before, which made me so happy!

I enjoyed having Blossom part of my herd for the past 6 months, she was a funny and loud little character whom loved nothing more than making a nest in the hay tray, getting comfy, sitting there and eating for a couple of hours. If she felt my presence (I don’t think she could hear very well) she would poke her nose out and accept my offering.
I truly believe she loved her retirement home here. I wish she’d come to me sooner.
Poor Newton has yet, once again lost another Wiflet.
We miss her already, Although she had her issues I absolutely was not expecting to find her passed away yesterday.
Sleep tight lovely Blossom. Say hello to Olive and Opal for me, you get to be with your family once again. 🌈

Such a sweet little piggy 💜 Very sad. Rest easy over the bridge little Blossom 🌈

I’m so sorry Blossom has left for the bridge. I agree with @Claire W that she went there to pass away.

Popcorn high over the bridge gorgeous girl ❤️

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry that you have lost your special old lady.

Please rest assured that Blossom didn't die from being wedged in but that she sought this space to die when her instinct drove her to leave the group in order to pass away at a safe distance in order to minimise the risk of attracting predators to the denning area.

I have experienced similar wedges between hay tray and grids by piggies of mine who had suddenly gone into organ failure and who even crawled back there after I put them into a fleece cave with a warm but not hot snuggle safe... It is very much an instinctive behaviour but it can be very upsetting for the owner. It's more typical for piggies who experience neurological/balance issues as their body is breaking down - it always depends on the order in which the major organs give way.
It was quite simply the day she'd got an urgent call to the Rainbow Bridge; her passing would have been pretty quick as these things go because of her advanced age.

Try to cherish the joy she has brought into her life, all the happy memories you share and accept the pain of the loss but please don't feel bad about where you found her.

I am so sorry you have lost Blossom but she will always be with you even though you can't see her 🌈

I am sorry to hear your sad news.
You gave Blossom a wonderful home full of love.
I agree with the other's, Blossom wasn't trapped in that space, she chose it. My Nugget shoved a hidey house out of the way with the last bit of strength he had to jam himself between the house and the grids.
Sending you hugs.

I am sorry to read your sad news, it must have been such a shock for you. As others have said, she knew the rainbow bridge was calling and had to leave you and her friends. You gave her love and a wonderful home for the last part of her life and seeing the photos, she was beautiful. She will be there in your memories and. one day those happy times will make you smile. Sending hugs x
Popcorn high Blossom 🌈

I'm very sorry that you have lost sweet Blossom.
Like the others, I'm sure she didn't get stuck in the place you found her.
Sleep tight Blossom! 🌈💔

Oh I’m sad to read that dear Blossom has died - as others have said she chose that place ….quiet and peaceful
Once that calling from RB happens …..
It’s such a shock when this happen unexpectedly - sending a big hug to you Hannah
Blossom was so fortunate to be rescued by you and your friend and would not have lived to 7.5 yrs if you hadn’t
Your friend and you gave her the best life possible and she was definitely a happy girl
Poor Newton ….but he has you to find him a wifelet
Popcorn freely at RB lovely Blossom …I can see you getting up to mischief with Opal and Olive

Oh Hannah, I am so sorry that you lost beautiful Blossom.
She was a grand age, a real tribute to your love and care.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve

Thank you Wiebke, that means a lot to know she most likely did not get stuck there and that you’ve have experienced similar when piggies know they are passing.

Sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful piggy and you gave her a wonderful retirement home. Sleep tight Blossom x
