My friends guinea pig went to be neutered today but there was a complication with the anesthetic and it was cancelled. Strangely he now has blood dripping from his penis even though he wasn't operated on. The vet has prescribed antibiotics for a uti but he was perfectly fine before he went in and it doesn't seem to be when he wees. Can anyone shed any light on what might be wrong. He's an adult pig but not sure of age as he is a rescue. Thanks x

Hi! Is it sheer blood or bloody urine? The onset of UTI is often characterized by bloody, very red urine that looks like guinea pig is bleeding. An UTI is unrelated to his aborted operation, especially in view that he has not been touched at all.
Guinea Lynx :: UTI

Please make sure that your friend is giving the whole course of antibiotic. She can make the early stages a bit easier by feeding a bit more mildly diuretic veg like lettuce, cucumber or dandelion to help flush the bladder in the first 203 days in order to bring down the acute symptoms, but not to the extreme as to cause diarrhea.

He has just had a wee and it's completely clear. When she collected him he had blood on his underside and all over the bedding. We lifted him up to see and it was dripping from his penis. He doesn't seem to be distressed.

I hope that it is clearing up after a few days. The beginning of a UTI can be some very red pees (that do not register blood in the urine) and then clear pees (that score quite high on blood in the pee). I have been there myself a few times!

I have not heard of bloody pees in connection with GA (general anaesthesia).

His wee is clear but blood was dripping from him? He is on antibiotics but it seems like a low dose considering his size.

PLEASE give the course of antibiotics anyway and contact the vet if you have any questions or concerns, or if the the antibiotic is not doing the trick.
The symptoms are not unusual for the onset of a UTI.

OK thanks. Think it is utI after all as concentration of wee is very strong and he was soaked in it. It seems to be dribbling out and smells very strong. I'm taking care of him at the moment. He's all clean now though x

If symptoms dont reduce in the expected time frame and hes still leaking urine, dripping blood and/or squealing when weeing, please have him xrayed for a possible bladder stone.

All the best
