Hi folks...
my rescue boar (approx 3-4) has been healthy til now.... he's started having white stuff on his penis which makes him squeak a little when peeing. My vet said it was a buildup of man stuff and he was given 5 day course of baytril/metacam and cleaned up. I've been keeping up with the rinsing but he isn't 100% comfy when peeing I don't think... plus he tries to hite when I'm cleaning him...! vet mentioned something she may be able to give him to help prevent this build up. Dods anyone know what this might be?
Thanks x

A build up of man stuff , thats a new one

Is there any faint spots of blood on the bedding ?
Is he with another pig ?

No, I am not sure what the vet has in mind. You are doing the right thing by keeping his "bits" as clean as you can. Warm saline solution might help( dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in half pint of boiled water and leave it to cool to luke warm) as it has an antibacterial effect. Use a lint free cotton pad( try the baby section of the supermarket shelves) and the saline solution. Are you sitting him up on your lap with his back against your tummy to clean his undercarriage? If he tries to nip you can try padding your supporting hand with a teatowel. That way he gets the towel and not your finger! Dry him off gently with a paper towel. Or ask a competent friend to help you. Good luck and hope it is sorted soon.

By the way.... is that Fraggle piggy in your avatar? From Bryn y Maen originally? Might be mistaken identity! Sorry if it is! x

Thank you .
he is a lone rescue as this is what we were advised by the rescue centre due to bonding issues (I have also tried). There was no visible blood but the tests the vet carried out showed minute traces which were gone by the second test 5 days later. I will have to ring them up again tomorrow. Yeah Aunty C he is on my worktop with his back against my tummy so I have a good hold of him etc but I will that trick thanks! Will the salt not burn?! :/

You can get two build ups of white 'stuff' on boars.... One is the sperm rods @theoretikos mentioned which are what they sound like - builds up of sperm which gets hard and forms a stick. They can be removed carefully from the penis.

You can also get a build up of smegma (white stuff that lubricates the penis etc) In that case you need to express his penis to clean it. I've once had a boar which had a problem with this, it felt like he had a peanut stuck up his willy, once we had it out and cleaned him up he was much more comfortable. Build ups like this can increase the chance of infections there too.

You are doing the right thing by keeping him clean and tidy. Also watch for hair, hay etc getting caught up there as that can cause issues too.

I know what you mean as Roddy has this all the time. I was just told to regularly clean with your fingers which works well for me :-) it smells and is a bit gross but hey better that then leaving it.

Wow Claire! You have a great memory! Yes that is Fraggle but sadly he died end of last year... the vet reckoned he may have been older than we thought and xrays of his nether regions showed scarring and after effects of the impaction he had when rescued. I was consumed by love for him though.... in the end there was nothing more they could do so he spent 3 days in animal hospital with me bringing him home every night... but on the 3rd night he died in my arms whilst we were snuggling. He was a star and we all loved him so much! He even had facebook followers ☺☺ my current is Muppet... a smooth coated lemon agouti... He's also a rspca rescue which Ive adopted from my friend who fell chronically ill..... He's been fine til now.... not sure why he's having this bout of smegma build up now! Poor Mupps x

Make it a weak salt solution, it is quite soothing. Very old fashioned remedy.

Aw dear old Fraggle. He was a great favourite with us all and I am sorry he has passed over the rainbow bridge, such a character. Hope Muppet gets better soon x

Was Roddy squeaking a little when peeing before it was cleaned off? :/ not squeaking badly... just a little?

Was the stuff you vet mentioned caled Cystise ? The come in red capsuals , l have used them on
A pig, but l can not remember what the out come was.

Hi, anyone ever used magneseum sulfhate? If l remember it it well used on rabits with this type of problem,

No Roddy has never squeaked when it's been like it, not that I've noticed anyway. And before I knew about it, it was pretty bad and even then he was fine :-)
I can only suggest keeping him clean and using the baytril and see what happens

Cystease is a supplement which contains glucosamine which acts to protect and maintain the bladder lining. It may be that the squeaking is because due to being mucky in that area he's ended up with a urinary tract infection. The baytril should help this but sometimes it needs a different antibiotic, not all infections respond to the same drugs. Cystease is of more help in chronic inflammation like interstitial cystitis not an acute infection caused by getting 'clogged up'

I hope that makes sense. Keeping him clean and tidy should hopefully reduce the chance of infection in the future. Recurrent infections or squeaky pees with no obvious signs of infection over and over again points towards interstitial cystitis. But have a chat with your vet about it.

They never mentioned a name.... they just said if it becomes an ongoing issue to go back and they could prescribe something to help prevent it

Thanks everyone... he's tucked up in a fresh bed now... appears happy ☺☺ will ring vet tmor see what she suggests... may be a case of just continuing with the washing and keep an eye
