I've just put my boar out on the floor for his free range time and he just sat there all puffed up, I picked him up and noticed he's wet underneath so I put him on his back on my knees so I could have a look and there was poo all caked round his penis, I cleaned it off but it looks swollen. Should I bathe him? Any advice very welcome!

Is he long haired? It could be a hair has entangled round his penis or he could have an infection (UTI). The fact he was fluffed up points to him being in pain. As for the poop, Is he impacted? Impaction is where the anus muscles become slackened & the soft pellets form a lump, this is easy to sort out but rather smelly.
A little bit about impaction - http://www.susieandpigs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/healthprobs.htm

If you're comfortable doing it, i would extrude his penis to check nothings caught round it/stuck to it - if it is gently immerse his bottom half in warm water to wash it off/detangle.

If nothing's evident then the only option is to take him to the vets as he may well need antibiotics :)

Thanks ever so much for your advice, however I now think its a bum thing rather than a penis thing........I gave him a wash and was drying him off and some really runny diarrohea came out of his bum, I then had him in a white towel whilst I was looking stuff up on here and when I took it off I noticed what could be really dilute blood on the towel! I cant take him to the vets until Tuesday as my car is going into the garage tomorrow! I'm really worried now, I have him in a carrier on his own with clean paper and hay, he's so subdued, not his normal squeeky wriggly self at all.

oh no :( I hope you get to the bottom of this (oops! just re-read that ... no pun intended!) . Maybe he should get to the vets before Tuesday, just my opinion. I deffinately think this is one for the vets, especially as you suspect blood.

I have to agree, I think the vets is in order for this one, better to put your mind at rest and get him checked over. I hope he starts to feel better soon x

Just had a read about impaction so had another look at him...this is going to sound a bit bonkers but what it looks like is diarrohea coming out of his penis! I've given the area a bit of a massage and cleaned up what came out, its very runny and smells like poo!

Could he maybe have something stuck down there? Just a thought?/

If he's got runny poops lay off the fruit/veg for about 48 hours and hopefully that will do the trick. Too many greens can cause this problem. Keep him on his dry food and hay.

personally,i'd phone an emergency vet. any poo problems like this need to be seen asap!

Are you definitely sure it's coming out of his penis? I don't mean to imply you're stupid it's just i had a piggy who lost an awful lot of blood, so much so that i thought something had killed him. I thought it was coming from his bum as both his bum & penis had blood on but when i got to the vets it was infact coming from his penis.

Have you extruded his penis? If you push gently just above it it should ease out quite easily & you will be able to determine fully that it is definitely his penis. It does sound like he has an infection, blood can indicate a UTI & other illnesses.
He really does need veterinary attention asap.
When piggies are ill/in pain they can stop eating & go downhill extremely fast.
Is he eating anything? If not you need to syringe him food; organic baby food (any veg or fruit variety) or if he eats pellets, add warm water to a small amount to make them into a mush & syringe him this.
If you don't have a syringe you can feed him from a baby spoon or teaspoon & you will also need to get water into him - the easiest way i've found is to put their water bottle to their mouth making them lick.

Good Luck with him, i do hope he'll be ok

I think he has gastroenteritis....i've given him half a tablet of diacalm with a syringe..he dribbled some of it out but hopefully some fluid will have gotten into him....he was making whimpering noises and shaking.....i'll keep syringing some fluid into him and then take him to the vets tomorrow after work...unfortunately there is no way I can take him before then...and i'm just wary about taking him as i've read a few stories about G.P's dying after receiving injections...but then he cant be left to go on as he is...its awful to watch...I dont know whether to leave him quiet or to cuddle him :{

Many thanks to everyone for their replies - especially to Hels who helped me out with the meds today! x

Sorry, missed the bit about the blood. If there's still some blood tomorrow then a trip to the vet is the best option :)

Oooh hun thats not good, I would try to get to the vet asap, blood and a wet bum 'can' be a kidney infection, even with a pooey bum, I have had that with one of my boys... he had cystitis too which was why he had an inflammed penis, as it hurt to wee...
Wish him all the best and sending lots of hugsx>>

If he's not in pain if you cuddle him then i would do so if you want to & would wrap him in a fleece or towel so he feels more secure.
Sending him get well hugs x)

Hi all....

Was preparing Peanuts last feed last night about half eleven, was going to give him his last feed and have a cuddle, it was too late, he'd passed away the 15 mins I was downstairs...I cant believe how quick the whole thing happened..my poor Peanut, he loved life and he loved the girlies! My god he was rampant! He was a very cuddly pig too x

So...I'm thinking it was Gastroenteritis...praying to god the other 4 dont get it, i've scrubbed everything bar the pigs themselves!

And thanks to everyone for their advice and support..it's been a sad day x

So sorry about Peanut. I have just caught up with this thread and then got to the few last postings about him passing away.

Very sad ... I am so sorry! :(

thank you

Hey thanks ever so much everyone for all your kind words - it does kind of help - at least the little guy isnt in pain anymore and will have a whole feast of girlies to chase at the Rainbow Bridge - its amazing how attached we get to the little critters...I think especially so when you're nursing them even just for a short while..I did love him and will miss him x

I lost my sow last year and it's still difficult some days as I nursed her for 6 months.

I'm so sorry for the loss of lovely Peanut, I can't believe this has happened, it's upset me so much. I didn't think he'd go to his forever sleep. xxxxxxx

Sleep tight Peanut, have fun up there on the bridge lovely boy xxxxxxxxxxx
