Hello all,

For those of you that breed piggies, i have a question for you.

If you have a boar that you have used as a stud, when he's retired from his 'duties', does he have to live on his own?

This has always puzzled me a bit, seing as piggies are such sociable animals, it would seem a shame if they had to live a solo retirement life.

Just me being nosy!

I don't breed, but when I adopted Roo I was told that, prior to being in rescue, he had been used for breeding. This has not prevented him from settling down as a friend with Sam.
However, I imagine for you to successfully bond a retired 'stud' with another boar, you may have to keep them in an area well away from your sows. I do not have any sows myself. I also think that Roo would not have bonded nearly as well with a more feisty, younger boar as he has with older, laid-back Sam.
Another point to consider is that Roo had had a few weeks of living alone in rescue (other pigs around but he was not sharing a cage with one) - he did not go straight from breeding to being bonded with another boar.

Sorry to ramble - hope it's some help!

I don't breed either, but i think it would be possible to bond the boar with another boar xx

It depends on the boar. I know a breeder that pairs up all her ex stud boars (where possible) some are allowed to have the run of the shed together too. They're kept around sows without a problem. Personality counts :)

I have had several breeding groups come in and I have always managed to pair the Boars up with a young Boar

Thinking about it I had a big breeding group come in and the boars had to stay in groups of 3 and four for a couple of wheeks until I had the extra cage space- sometimes needs must ::) There was no fighting at all and they all paired up with each other, these were from 3 months to 8 months.

I have a pair of boars that came from a breeder and had been used as "stud" boars. The jury is still out as to wether they will get on in the long term, but they are alright 90% of the time. I have read that board that have been bred are much harder to pair up but wasn't sure if that was true ?
