Hi I have a long haired neutered boar (neutered october 2017 and adopted and advised age approx age 3yrs). We have recently paired him up since the loas of his brother with 2 5month old sows. Hes been totally fine, eating and pooing and no noticeable peeing issues and apart from sleeping a bit more, although hes always been fairly chilled nothing seems to be an issue.

Whilst doing a clean of bum area today i noticed that he feels swollen in his groin area. He had a very large smegma build up around his penis which i carefully cleaned and apart from that it seemed okay. ive attached a photo to help with where. Its like a V from the penis upwards almost in direction of nipples, one is directly to it (left) and the right runs up but alongside it. Its almost like he has swollen tubes from above penis up to the nipples, id say about 0.5-1cm thick? I'm not sure on the anatomy and obviously will take him to be looked at by vet but just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas while i do.

Hi! Please have him vet checked. Your symptoms are not the typical late post-op complications like an abscess, a hernia or impaction.

Thanka Wiebke i will be doing, will try get him booked in asap. Hes sat in his piggy dig on me qt the minute. After all the issues eith his brother i just feel so low he may be ill :( I'm not he most experienced but make sure we feed them and look after them all so well x

Thanks Wiebke, took him and the girls to the vet our local, they needed registering. The vet seemed to think nothing to worry about and said that she thought they were fat pads? He is a big boy (were watching his weight now) but just seems an odd place for them.. will see how he gets on and if not take him to my other vet who is more exerienced

Hi, just wondering if you found out what the issue was? My neutered boar Boh is showing almost identical symptoms. He's being treated with antibiotics for cystitis due to blood in his urine but yesterday I discovered a swelling just like you describe. Boh was also neutered last October so it would be unusual to develop an abscess this long after surgery. They took another urine sample at the vet today and he still has blood in it but no bacteria or obvious signs of infection, so the vet suspects the blood may be coming from (what remains of) his reproductive parts instead of his bladder. They'd already done an ultrasound of his bladder which showed nothing unusual so my vet has booked him in for another ultrasound next week to investigate the swelling. Would love to know how your piggy is getting on.

Hi! Please open your own support thread for any enquiries and advice big clicking on the section you want to post in and then on the large 'post thread' button. We ask our new members to please not post their own issues on other members' threads as that can get very confusing.

PS: There are post-neutering complications like hernias that can happen as late as that after a neutering op.

Hi Wiebke, I do have my own thread up for Boh's bloody urine. I've just been searching the forum for his symptoms and came across this which sounds much like what Boh has. Not trying to hijack this thread, just wanted to learn more from @Hbecooper in case we can help each other/shed light on this problem.

Hi sorry to not update. I would suggest getting your pig looked at again especially with having current issues. It turned out to be fat pads! He is quite a large pig, hes about 4yrs old and very long haired. Apparently they can get them and they gave them a good look at but felt there was nothing untoward. Advised just to keep an eye on anyway but couldn't feel anything and no issues with urine etc so just a look and see. Hope that helps.

That's wonderful that there's nothing wrong with your boy in the end! I doubt it's fat in my boy as it's much more pronounced on one side and very squishy. Been reading about hernias and now I'm worried that it's that. :( He seems absolutely fine and pain-free though, even when the swollen area is palpated. Hopefully the second ultrasound on Tuesday will reveal more. Fingers crossed that he won't need surgery. I've blown all my money on vet bills these past 2 months. I'm starting to think piggies are the most expensive pets in the world. :(

Yes his turned quite squishy on one side more than the other but felt very lump like on the right so i was positive it was something untoward but was okay. I still couldnt quite believe it to be fat pads because of where they were but she assured me they were. They honestly felt like long swollen strips and a lump in the centre x fingers crossed nothing sinister in your case. Please do update us xx
