I have rescued a boar who is around 2 years old. He had been abandoned outside a pets at home and the lady I got him from adopted him and had him for 3 months. His diet was not brilliant she fed him on only nuggets and apples, he had no hay or variety of fruit and veg.
He has poo stuck to his bum and I'm not sure how to deal with it. I gave him a bath when I got him home as he was stinking and his cage was so dirty. But I did not want to stress him out too much by trying to get the poo off. I don't know wither it was his diet that has caused this or not.
I also have a 3 month old boar who has met Alfie my new boar and their initial meeting went well but I am going to keep them in their own cages for now to make sure that Alfie is totally healthy.
Once they are together they will be in a lovely custom build 2 level hutch in the summer and a nice big 2 level inside cage over the winter.

are you able to get a clear close up photo so the more experienced members here can give you the correct advice?

Is it poo stuck to the fur or the actual bum? If its the latter it could be a more serious issue than just stuck poo so would need to be seen by a vet.

I'd recommend a vet visit to see either Jo Hadley or Emma Keeble at the Dick Vet at Bush. Get him checked out to see if there are any other underlying problems. Poo could be impacted, but it could also be something more serious and painful for the poor piggie. Dick Vet small animal hospital acts a first call vet service and has a specialist exotic dept. Any help needed, pls pm me.

Ok I have taken a photo how do I up load it. Th poo is in his bum not stuck to his hair. I have booked an appointment tomorrow to get him checked out.

Hope this works

Thanks for posting so quickly, I'm sure someone will be along soon who might be able to advise better. Plus you have vet booked so hope all works out x

Hopefully you are taking him to a piggie savvy vet - I cannot recommend the Dick Vet highly enough. they have looked after all my piggies and I have not lost one due to infection or misdiagnosis yet.

That looks like a classic case of impaction.

This link will show you how to empty the anal sac safely. Hopefully an improved diet with plenty of fibre and not too much brassica (cabbage, kale, etc) type veg will help stop this from reoccurring.

I am un able to get to the Dick Vets as I do not have a car and I would have to take at least 2 buses to get there and I think it would really stress my piggy out being on a bus. I am taking him to my local vets Mackie & Brechin who I have been going to for 15 years plus with everything from cats to hamsters. They are really good.

DO let us know how you get on, does look like simple impaction to me which is easy to fix and manage with good diet :) x

That is Alfie back from the vets apart from his sore bum he is in good health. He has been given Baytril Oral solution as his bum is very sore and inflamed got to give him 0.4ml per 100ml of drinking water. He has also got Hibiscrub which we have to bathe his bum in to try and get the rest of the poo off as it was very hard.
The vet wee saw was very good with him and there was also a student vet who has 4 piggies at home so she was very sympathetic.
He said now his diet has improved he will get much brighter too as Alfie does seem down in the dumps. I would be too if I had been kept in those conditions. He has his forever home now and will be shown lots of love and affection.

Aww glad that the outlook is good and that he's with a caring responsible person now.

Do show us some pics in the stories and photos section when you can :)

You may find that he won't want to drink the water with the baytril in it - it tastes vile. Most pigs will take it directly if syringed in to their mouths (add a little fruit juice to disguise the taste). Giving a probiotic will help combat the antibiotics killing off the good bacteria as well as the bad. It will also help the impaction problem a little.

You can get probiotic online (I use Avipro) or at a large pet store (Pro-C).
