i'm after advice on the best way of cleaning a boar's scent/grease gland.
it was bathtime again last week, and i tried shampoo, washing liquid and swarfega for a few mins each, but Monty's gland is still thick and waxy.
does it just need more time? he absolutely hated me washing him anyway but got very grumbly everytime i was trying to wash his gland.
any hints or tips out there please? ?/

It usually takes a little while for the treatment to take effect, then from my experience it doesn't just wash off ... you have to gently scrape it off. Then I usually then pop Savlon on the area which can look a little red.

Having said that I have only neutered boars now and they don't suffer from that.

I have done a bit of boar bum washing this week too. Swarfega massaged in to the grease gland for about 5 minutes, then bum into the washing up bowl and a double shampoo of gorgeous guineas five oil shampoo. It did the trick. Maybe you just didn't massage it in for long enough, they can be a bit stubborn. xx

Yup boys grease glands can be a real pain in the bum ...... no pun intended!

I think like nutmeg that you probably need to leave the washing up liquid or swarfega on for longer. With one of my boys I have to use my finger nails to slide the grease off the hair :)>>> but it does do the trick, so try leaving it on for a bit longer next time.

thank you all so far
i think it has just got too thick, so it may take quite a few tries to get it off completely :)>>>
does anyone use an implement - i thought i'd seen mention of a soft toothbrush somewhere?
lets see what more advice comes in the morning
sweet dreams

My Basil was neutered (before he came to me) but I'm afraid he still had a bit of a grease gland problem.

New Question

Just trying to keep the threads together.

this is a new, rather disgusting and explicit topic, so if you are feeling queasy or are easily offended please DO NOT read on.

ok

we are slowly getting there with the grease glands, and all the boys had a lovely bath at the weekend in their new GG shampoo.

BUT the night, after i noticed a piece of hay stuck up Monty's bottom, so i picked him up and pulled it out. it came out covered in thick white gloop, and IT STANK. So i thought i ought to have a better look. i turned him over and parted his testicles to have a better look, directly at his anus, and the whole area was full of thick foul smelling semi-sticky white stuff. (the smell was unbelievable, and i've smelt some bad things in my time! :)>>> ) it was not hard and 'prittstick' like, but it was thicker than the 'white marks' on the fleece. I am assuming it is a combination of crystalised wee, 'boy emissions' and generally unclean boyness. the surprising thing was he was clean around his willy. the area was not red nor did it look at all infected. We checked Arthur, our other 'big boy' and he too was mucky and smelly in the same area, not not quite as bad.

So we have taken to trying to clean them a bit, day by day, with wipes and cotton wool, much to their embarrassment. :red

Has anyone else come across this. if so do you have any tips for the least uncomfortable way to clean the pig for both me and him.

i don't think it is anything serious but would appriciate tips on how to manage the problem.

many thanks from an embarrased guinea mummy.

Mmmm yummy, so glad I read this just before I served tea up! Roly had something like this a while ago, and alongside not putting weight on I was worried, so took him to the vet who said it was a bacterial infection. Baytril cleared it up, and I gave pro biotics too. I cleaned him up with cotton buds. Having said that, if there is no other cause for concern such as weight loss or poor appetite, it could be something quite normal for boys? Eww. Hope others can help more. Best of luck. x

My Mimsi has very loose bum muscles and needs cleaning out every other day. Its amazing, the things I find lodged up there. I found a small bit of carrot once! I cleaned Mimsis grease gland at the weekend. I have swarfega for when its particularly bad, but can usually get away with some GG shampoo and a cotton bud. If its really bad then keep with the swarfega and I'm sure it will eventually loosen. Ive used vaseline before and that has worked as well. Its such a smelly job and not for the faint hearted. Poor Mimsi is so used to me poking his bum with a cotton bud but knows that he gets a treat when its over so puts up with me.

EEK!what have i let myself in for!ive never had boys before, (ive got 2 daughters) so i think I'm in for a new experience when its bath night for my little boy piggies!think i definately need to do some research on boar bits!

so glad i have girls after reading that! poor boy though i am sure he will get used to you dealing with his downstairs eventually

I am amazed at some of the things that I pull out of my boys bums. Doesn't bother me at all. It's at times like this though that you realise piggies have eye brows! ha x

Ah, this thread has given me some great giggles! I'm on boars 6 and 7 and can relate to most of the things mentioned.

Oh the eyebrows - Celyn can do a fantastic Roger Moore impression when I'm, uh, "tending to his bits." :))

My Basil was neutered (before he came to me) but I'm afraid he still had a bit of a grease gland problem.

And he's still not speaking to me because I bathed him last weekend. I use a gritty powder I get from Lakeland - like a dry version of Swarfega that you mix with water to form a paste. Very effective.

Still, his Royal Basilness will be a bit happier when he gets his paws on the bag of bean leaves on Monday. If my OH doesn[t bring them, Basil will savage his ankles.
