Bob has a strange lump

Have only just found it.....a lump right about where an adams apple is or would be,the size of a marble quite deep,not under the skin...he is about 4 years old...and its just hit me that this could be the reason for his none squeak.Just a stained rasp. He has lost weight ,a little.....but put that down to a skin irritation hes just recovered from.He eats like a horse and doesnt seem to be in pain....could this be cancer?
I'm quite worried he's my soul mate...
 
Hi Kay...I'm so sorry about your baby. I'm not much help, but I know there will be a ton of people on here shortly with advice. When my piggie had a lump, I couldn't believe how many people came on to help me. I don't know what I would have done without them! I'll cross my fingers that it turns out to be nothing. Lots of lumps do turn out to be harmless and as long as it does not bother your piggy, they will leave it alone. Mine was an abscess but it was raised very high above the skin. i am not much help either i am afraid, just thought i would suggest getting him checked out at the vet to ease your mind. as it is easy for people on here(no offense) can say what they think it is but your vet will be able to see it and touch it and be able to ease your mind. like annie said if he is eating and happy in himself then think the vet will leave it. but i would get it checked out to play it safe. sending you and bob hugs and cuddles from oz. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
 
it could just be an absess or a sebacious cyst. there are a few threads on them on here, mine being one of them. my piggy heath had just been to the vets today about an absess. id get him to the vet if it were me O0
 
Yes i think the vet is a good option.It actually feels the same as the lumps our old dog gets....fatty lumps...but i'll take him to the vets for re-assurance if nothing else...thanks all
 
My last piggie had a similar sounding lump on his tummy which turned out to be nothing but a fatty lump.

Best to get it check out though! :)

Hi all,
Thanks for your support.Bob's got an appointment with a vet who specialises in small animals tomorrow morning at 10.50.Which is good as the lump has grown since tuesday,i'm worried it may start interfering with his swallowing etc soon.
Its a lot further away than our usual vet but i know how important it is to see someone who knows a guinea pig.
I'm also dreading it....... :'(..........the lump is very deep in.........still.......will keep you posted

Hi Kay...Bob is beautiful! Try to be optimistic. When I brought Ricky in with his lump, the thing was almost as big as his head. The second lump was just as big. I thought the worst, but thank goodness for a knowledgeable vet. It was tough, but you'd be surprised what vet's can do. I'm sure your vet will help Bob. It's worth traveling for a vet who has knowledge of guineas. There are lots of people on this board who don't have any vets that treat small exotics, so it's sad when they get sick. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for little Bob. Please let us know what the vet says tomorrow. Hugs and kisses to Bob!

Just got back from the vets,she rather liked Bob. The vet thinks its either a cyst or an ingrown abcess.She wants to remove the lump.Apparently it's very common,it's not attached to anything and it would be best to do the op now while he's still healthy.The cost will be no more than £80 which i think is a bit steep.When i said i thought it could be a fatty lump,she said piggies generally,dont get them,she's never had one. The lump is more likely to be an abcess as its very solid.I'm not sure what to do now,you know how sensetive piggies are to being put under.
The vet also thinks the reason Bob doesnt squeak properly any more is because he isn't outside with his mates in the summerhouse,he may be missing them.So he's moving out today.
I expect i'll have the op done,it's just the fear of him dying on the operating table that worries me.If i leave it...eventually it will kill him anyway....ah well.
 
if your vet is a piggy savy vet then i am suob will make it through the surgery. as for piggies not getting fatty lumps our rosie did and she had them removed. our zoe had her reproductive organs and a mass taken out on january 17th and she made it and i am sure your bob will too. talk to your vet and tell her your fears. sending you both hugs, cuddles and prayers that all will go well. zoe's surgery and treatment cost over $1,000.00AUD around $500 pounds. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: take care will be thinking of you both. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
 
Don't be afraid to put Bob under anesthesia. I have done it 3 times already with my baby and he's only 5 months old! He had two abscesses. The vet completely removed them and the first time he was stitched up. He twice ripped open the stitches and finally I had to keep flushing out the abscess. The second time, they didn't bother to stitch it up, I just had to keep flushing that one as well. A good vet knows what they are doing. He should do fine while he is under. They grow so rapidly (the abscesses), so do it fast! It gets worse when they grow. I won't even begin to tell you know much the vets here in New York charge for the surgery. It's sickening. Choloe's baby, Zoe, went through major surgery and came out fine with the anesthesia. So don't be afraid to do it! You'll be relieved when it done! I am afraid I disagree with your vet in that gps do not get fatty lumps. They can and do.They are very common and harmless.I leave them alone.No surgery should be undertaken lightly,there is always risk even with the best aneasthetic and a good surgeon.

If you do decide to have the surgery find a vet that uses vesoflurine,this is the safest anesthetic for gps.Do not starve the piggy for more than 2 hours before the surgery,it is not necerssary as gps do not vomit.
 
like i said in my post our guinea pig rosie had fatty lumps and she had to have 3 removed because of there position. rosie had them removed from a non piggy savy vet and she made it with flying colours, before surgery rosie was the OH's though after surgery whether it was cause OH is male or vet and nurse were male but rosie would have nothing to do with OH and was all over me. :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: really hoping bob is alright today. sending hugs and cuddles to you and bob. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
i also know more now and i would NOT put my piggy through surgery unless need be, as surgery is way too stressful for the little furbabies. and the drugs for the surgery etc really mess up their tummies. good luck. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
