Bonbon's Mystery

She's out playing in the run with her adopted daughter. She loves grass time, you can hear her happily gurgling to the others as she bounds across the run.
@biscandmatt i'm more than aware about the dangers of vaporub (I won't use olbas oil), hence I only used a smidgings worth in a place she can get away from if she wishes, and i'll only do it if i hear her nasal congestion again, touch wood she sounds nice and clear atm. She seems so much better for it, and has a plump little belly today. She came to the front of the cage for grass this morning, which lately, the only thing that draws her out is the veg. She was even up on her hind legs :)

BonBon is on her jollies with the vet nurse, she's put on 37g since last week, not bad considering she's usually weighed in the afternoon, and it was first thing in the morning. She's still dribbling a bit, but no where near as much as she has been, I think the septrin is working, especially now i have worked out how to get her to take it.
I'm hoping the next few days, she'll show them what she's been doing, and it'll help diagnoses. She looked more normal as well, properly hydrated, glossy but yellowish white coat too. You can tell she's back on the nuggets and eating her treats again by the colour of her rump..

BonBon's home, but we're still no nearer to solving this mystery. She's maintained weight, and not gained, but the infection has cleared up, as she's no longer nasal.
They've given me some recovery to help her gain some calories as she's eating more veg than anything else atm, along with grass and her treats, just not enough nuggets. She was glad to be home, and popcorned on the roof of the house. I still feel as though we're on a uphill struggle, She's been off the septrin for a few days, and is just on metacam. I think I'll be adding probiotics to her recovery food.
I'm going to see how she goes on over the weekend, and maybe book her in again next week.
I've changed the shavings so she's now on recycled paper, and strongly considering removing the hay and just using timothy hay as a bedding instead, thinking towards allergies now, and process of elimination.

They seem to have forgotten about the probiotics (fibreplex) hence why I think she has soft stools, so she's straight back on it. I've started her on recovery food, and plying her with nice things.
Can guinea pigs be allergic to lettuce, or become allergic? I'm starting to suspect she might be :(

i've heard that too much lettuce can cause soft poops in some piggies because of the high water content, although most do very well on it. it could be that her whole system is just unbalanced at the moment so alot more sensitive.

glad she is back home and it's nice to hear she did a popcorn on her house :luv:

She'd sooner leg it off around the flat than have her recovery food. She's so bright and full of herself! Fingers crossed change of bedding is enough, if not i might send a hair sample off to find out what her allergies are (Works for horses).

:)) cheeky piggy :luv:

Today is one of her good days. I've noticed she gets a crackly nose when she eats lettuce, but not with anything else, is that significant? Seems odd, no other veg irritates in this way.
Going to get more fibreplex tomo, as it's helping :)

Just an update: I took her off the metacam about three days ago, and switched to gripe water and fibreplex - nothing else.
Each day there has been quite an improvement, and today is the first day I can dare to post this. She's happy again, milling about the cage, and gaining weight. Her poops are still not desirable, but the fact she's now eating better, and stopped drooling is a plus, and she lets me stroke her chin now, where as before she found it uncomfortable.
I'll keep her on the gripe water for a few more days, then take her back to the vets, and ask about other gut supports, to help her rebuild her gut flora.
All in all, i'm feeling much more optimistic about getting her better at this time :)

She's continuing to do well, she's even started bossing her two adopted daughters about again, which is quite something, as Truffles is 4 times the size of her, and is usually very bossy!
Long may this continue :)
Edited to add, crackling has disappeared completely when eating lettuce, her eyes are much improved after all that weeping they've been doing, and she's almost white again, very little sign of drooling (coat would get covered in food when she'd been grooming) and every time I check her mouth, no excess fluid in her mouth either.
She protests about the gripe water just a bit, but takes the fibreplex readily straight out of the syringe, so she must know it's helping. Nuggets are still a grey area, and i'm reluctant to top the bowl up, so i'm just giving them extra hay and readi-grass for now, and access to lots of vitamin C type veg.
She's eating everything with gusto, fingers crossed she continue to surprize me with her recovery.
