Bonbon's Mystery

Arthritis is what we're looking into at this moment of time :) Vet seems to think she's got a little too much going on with her jaw, and I did tell her that she's developed a habit of grinding her teeth when annoyed (she does this when she wants food, and I started noticing it a while ago).
They're trying not to stress her out too much at this stage, I think she's done remarkably well to cope with being gassed and messed with. When Liquourice came home after GA, she took a while to find her feet again. Fresh grass is on the menu today, i'm going to go and get some readi grass for her, as she's a big fan of the green stuff atm.
Vet said when they opened up yesterday morning, she was chowing down on the hay and very bright. I hated leaving her, but with the hours I work, she needed to be in the right place.
Gave her the metacam this morning, and fibreplex to be greeted by a syringe worth of poo soup she'd created.. I honestly think she's got it nailed, making her own soup. No idea how she's managing to do it. Could she be stealing the other piggies poops?
She's looking marginally better this morning, I guess I should have expected an initial nose dive before any real improvement. Today, she wants to be a tortoise, head out of the window of her house at the mere chance of some green stuff.

The difference in her today is remarkable. She's properly hydrated, looks it too, and has lost that fluffed up appearance she's had this week. I'll post a video from tonights antics in a min. I can't believe it!

great news :D

Update: I'm 99% sure she has either Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis due to her symptoms over the weekend. Going to take her back to the vets today, and hoping to get her on a course of either septrin, or similar. Pretty sure a bacterial infection is involved. Reading up on symptoms it makes sense, really does.
After a rather promising few days, she's taken a step backwards, but please cross your fingers as we might be getting closer to an answer. I have videoed her making a funny noise from her nose yesterday, and the way she was breathing at the time, indicating some possible swelling in her nose.

Vet's put her on a course of septrin, and thinks she's running a bit of a temperature. I'm to carry on with the metacam and fibreplex. She's not lost any more weight, so is at least stable atm, i'll post a video of her crackling shortly. She's not doing it today.
Vet's gone off to do some research. If it wasn't for being so bright..... I really don't know. We're in the process of making holiday arrangements for when i'm away next week. Hopefully she'll be staying with a vet nurse for a few days. Fingers crossed.

Holiday cover arranged, she's off to stay with a nice vet nurse for a few days next week.
I've been in touch with a animal communicator/healer, hoping to get a reading before we go back to the vets on friday. Got a message this afternoon asking how she was as healing and prayers had been sent, and I have to admit, BonBon has picked up a lot this afternoon, eating better, bright, wish she'd gain some weight, but at least she's stable.
She tried to take the fibre plex out of my hand and started chewing the nozzle.

poor little one. that video of her breathing sounds bad. it reminds me of my rabbit matt and his chronic respiratory infection. i can't remember if you already said, but has she had tests done or had treatment already regarding a possible respiratory infection?

good news about her weight though and good to hear she is brighter :)

very interested to hear about the animal communicator aswell. how does that all work? :)

She's just on metacam, septrin and fibreplex. The crackling has completely disappeared, which I was even hearing when she was grooming herself. She's had a dry chin now for 24 hours, and it's getting whiter. Her eyes look clear again, and she took a entire lettuce this morning, nearly ate the lot.
I'm daring to wear a white dressing gown (other is in the wash) not a sign of dirty paws.
A friend works through looking at photo's or can communicate over the phone. She's been sending her healing vibes, and I honestly think over the last 24 hours something definitely has changed, she's pretty much herself again.
Just a wait and see now, she's due more meds shortly, then its off to work again for me. I think a visit to the vet on Friday, then she's back there Monday ready for her little holiday.

Question, can a guinea pig be given antihistamines? Vet said she was going to look it up, as it was one of the options available to BonBon if it was. She said, if she was a dog, she'd have tried steroids and antihistamines as the next course of action if BonBon continued to go down hill, but being a guinea pig, that option was clearly out.

if other more common treatments don't seem to be working, our vet will try an anti-histamine just on the off chance. it very rarely makes a difference he said but is definitely worth a try. i think piriton is the one matt had. it didn't work in his case but you never know, each pet is different :)

i have always been interested in animal communicators and have considered it for my rabbit bisc. his situation is a bit complex and sometimes i just wish i could ask him some questions to help me to help him. i have known him, cared for and loved him for over nine years and we are very closely bonded but sometimes he is still a puzzle to me :)) a very complex creature and particularly fussy but who i love beyond words :luv:

I have a friend who's pony was really ill and the vets struggled to diagnose what was wrong. She said to me if it hadn't been for the communicator, the next action would have been to pts, pony made a complete U turn in just days, she had managed to pin point the area where the problem was and what treatment she needed.
The thought at 2:40pm Monday was a possible pts for BonBon, but something stopped me in my tracks.
Can these UTI's grumble on for a while before becoming obvious? I actually believe this one has been chipping at her silently for weeks just not obvious enough to be seen until this weekend gone. @biscandmatt

i know some people are sceptical of things like this but i really believe some people do have a gift for communicating with animals, i really do.

i am very much into gut instinct aswell so if something stopped you in your tracks and you had a gut feeling, always go with it.

i do think uti's can go on for a while. and i also think that sometimes owners like us on the forum spot things almost too early. even sometimes before tests will show something up. it's frustrating because you know your pet and when something is not quite right, but then you have no choice but to keep them comfortable whilst you try and find out what it is which seems to take forever.

i think i mentioned my rabbit bisc and having to wait it out until his third lot of in-depth tests finally showed what his issue was. it is not nice when they have something wrong but at least you know then what you're dealing with. my rabbit matt who had the chronic respiratory problems was a real struggle. it was just so chronic and just didn't seem to respond to anything properly. it took a good 18 months to find a combination of meds that worked for him and kept him stable. i would recommend our vet just for this case alone because he was amazing and finally got matt stable. he never gave up and i know 100% that without him, matt would not have survived and been with us for aslong as he was :luv: heartbreakingly it was another very rare problem that took him from us in the end :( he didn't have much luck health wise but he was still such a happy and silly little boy which is why we continued to fight with him against his pesky nose!. :luv:

sorry, i keep rambling today but mentioning him just got me thinking about it all again. it was a stressful time really, like you are having, but we got there in the end and i hope you will too :) x

My Liquorice (Black and white piggy on the left in my avatar) was a once in a lifetime piggy, she went through so much in the 6 months before I lost her. I promised myself to go that extra mile with BonBon, who left a pile of well formed poops on my lap this morning :)) She has been eating them all of late, and quite possibly her sisters poops as well.

bless her :luv: we get all this worry and stress, and they get to just poop on us! :)) and the more worrying thing is that we then get excited that they are pooping well and that the poops look well formed, the right size, colour and consistency :)):)):))

I've noticed BonBon is scratching her left ear a lot. If I rub behind it, she goes crazy with her scratching, The area looks bruised. She still has a infection going on, and she's booked to see the vet on Monday before spending a few days with the vet nurse whilst i'm away. I'm going to let them know if she deteriorates whilst i'm away, to do what's right by her, and not let her suffer, but if they can pin point the cause of her discomfort, then do what they can for her.
She'll be in the right hands what ever way.
She's continuing to fight the infection, and keeping a good appetite. She was on the nuggets this morning. Her eyes are very watery, showing irritation going on, i'm going to ask them to check her ears, and do an x-ray. I'm wondering whether eye drops is the next med she needs to try.

Good to hear she is improving in terms of eating.
Could be the infection is not only in the sinuses/nasal cavity but also in the ear canal ...or because she is below par she may have succombed to ear mites......Good idea to get vet to check her ears thoroughly (with possible Xray) and if there is any pus to take a swab and get it cultured to ensure the bug is not resistant to septrin...(or the abx in any ear or eye drops that might be prescribed)

x.

Managed to get her to take the septrin this morning, worked out that if I let her empty her mouth first, I can get her to take her meds. I'm basically giving her what she wants atm, lots of grass and veg, I saw her nibbling hay this morning, so she's starting to eat a wide range of food again, but i don't think she's out of the woods by a long shot.
Her weight is stable atm, but she is having several meals a day, to keep her interested which seems to be working.
Whatever is wrong, it's all head related, she's digesting her food ok, and is quick on her feet when she hears a rustling bag.

BonBon was making that crackling noise in her nose this morning, so I had a brainwave, I put a tiny smudge of vaporub on the blanket she's resting on as I type. The noise stopped instantly, don't think i'll be putting it on her, as at least when she's had enough she can move away from it. (Yes I heard about a guinea pig having a really bad reaction when her owner did that, and seriously injured herself trying to get away from the smell, I think piggy passed away, can't remember).
Mouth clear this morning, and took her meds readily. Better day for her today I think, but her ears are really hot :(

I hope BonBon continues to improve. If you have any doubts that her health is not improving take her to the vets for a check up. Guinea Pigs are devilishly cunning in hiding illnesses.

Thanks :) She's going first thing tomorrow for a check up, the vet nurse who's going to look after her works there.
BonBon is sat eating hay (the american timothy stuff), which is the first time i've seen her eat the stuff in a week, i'm guessing the vaporub is helping to clear her head, thus she's feeling a bit better.
The blanket is folded on the ramp with the scent towards the wall and upside down to prevent a certain nosey female (Truffles) from chewing it, BonBon is sat under the ramp, and can move away from it any time she wants to.

You can actually see the relief in her face as she's snuggling down. Probably going to get her first decent kip in ages I hope.

glad she is doing better. be careful with anything like vaporub and things like olbas oil. we were told to avoid using anything like this even at a distance because it can really irritate the nasal lining, and especially if it's already inflammed :)
