I have a recently bereaved sow who is 2yrs old and have just got another sow of the same age. In the process of trying to bond them and would like some advice on whether to continue or split them.
Daisy my original sow is very submissive, and is spending her whole time trying to climb out of the bonding pen.
Poppy the new sow chases Daisy round every time they get near each other and nips and removes fur each time. Daisy is submissive squealing everytime Poppy approaches.
They have been together for 2hrs now and have been scent swapping for the previous few days and they had visual contact with adjacent runs.
Poppy is eating and acting normal between chasing but Daisy is just freezing in the corners.
Currently Poppy is resting and Daisy is staring hopefully out of the pen.
Should I continue with this or accept that it is not a pairing that will work.

I wouldn't persist in this as it sounds like Daisy is getting very distressed. Sorry it is not going well, the chasing is one thing but the nipping and removing fur. I would separate for now. Tagging in @Wiebke for you.

Did you bond in neutral area? Worth having a read of this thread here also Illustrated Bonding / Dominance Behaviours And Dynamics

Welcome to the forum by the way

Hi and welcome

Are you bonding in a neutral area?
Personally, I rather have my doubts that is bonding will come off, unfortunately. Poppy is making it rather clear that she doesn't want Daisy in her personal space, isn't she?

As an alternative option, you may want to consider bonding for a suitable sow or neutered boar at a good rescue that offers this service, so you come home with a new mate only if there has been success. All our recommended rescues only rehome properly sexed, quarantined/healthy, guaranteed not pregnant piggies and are experienced in matching up and bonding guinea pigs. They are by far the safest places to get piggies from if you can get to one!

It is a completely neutral area, neither have been in the room or had contact with the pen before. there are plenty or resources hay, food, water all round the pen so nothing can be guarded.

Sorry that this has gone so badly for you and your Daisy. Not all piggies get on just as we don't. Be worth following @Wiebkes advice and try a rescue centre to help with bonding.

Thank you all for your advice. I will have a look and see what rescue centres I can get too.

Highly recommend palace piggies rescue. Very friendly and dedicated to guinea pig welfare.
