I just wondered if anyone had successfully bonded adults sows together? I know boars you shouldn't, but I just wondered about the sows?
thanks Natasha

When Minx lost her (female) companion coming up to three years, I found her a new friend of EXACTLY the same age at a rescue. Dizzy basically adopted herself by sticking to Minx like glue and made herself at home in record time (hence her name, she was Daisy before). Dizzy had been given up for rehoming after losing her own companion and was yearning for a new friend.

Sows are a lot easier to bond than Boars, if you read peoples threads you'll see that many of us have small herds of sows together. When introducing sows do it in a neutral area, there may be a little squabbling to start with as they work out who is boss but on the whole a new sow wont take long to settle in with an established group.

If you are thinking of adopting a sow you may find that you are able to take your existing sow to the rescue centre with you to see how she gets on with her potential new cage mate.

When I had pigs as a small child I did it quite often, I had a lone pig so rescued another a similar age so both over 2, we put them together and there wasn't any fighting at all it was as if they has always been together, this was the same with another pair many years later. I once introduced an older sow to a pair of older sows, this was more difficult but we got there

In my experience sows usually get along ok in groups, but like dogs - if two sows fall out, it's even more vicious than when boars do! I've got one who is notorious, Cowpat, who refused to get on with anyone here or at Vikki's - she beat up every single pig we tried! She's now living happily in a group with a neutered boar

I've recently had a boar neutered and have been offered two sows to live with him, who currently live together.

Would you expect them all to get on when I eventually introduce him to them - or could their be issues?

Thanks

Well strictly speaking there is a potential problem to be had when bonding any guinea pigs together, but I reckon your chances of bonding your boar with two sows are very good. I think if you have the room then go for it :)
