One of Milans eyes has got increasingly cloudy over the last few months. Originally we thought it was his cataracts worsening until recently we noticed something wasnt right. His eye has deteriorated very quickly in the last 2-3 months.

We took milan to the vet regarding his eye when we first realised that it was not his cararacts about 2 months ago. The vet did different tests and had no idea what was wrong. She did however state that it does not seem to cause any pain or irritation and therefore we were not in a huge rush to find out what was wrong. We were refferred to an eye specialist and today got his diagnosis- bone formation in his eye! Apparently its caused from excess vitamin C and is very rare! The vet said theres not much that can be done to prevent as decreasing vitamin C is not recommended. The specialist said that it should never cause any problems for milan and we are to just monitor it. There is no treatment. Here is his eye at present after continuing to worsen

Just keep an eye on it in case it is either bulging or getting smaller; otherwise there is nothing you can do. It is not painful, so apart from slowly losing sight in that eye, which he also would have done on a cataract, there is no loss of quality of life for Milan.

It is not as rare in guinea pigs as in other animals; my Maelog had this in the last year of his life (he died from another cause aged 7 years in February).

Poor boy. My Alby had this in one eye without the cataract. He lived till he was very elderly. (Not sure how old he was when I got him) it never seemed to bother him.

Wow, it's really obvious to see. Bless him x

Thanks guys. Its nice to hear stories that pigs have lived their life without it bothering them as it sounds very promising. I'm just glad that we now know what it is because i had never heard of it before

Look under "osseous metaplasia". It is not all that uncommon in guinea pigs. Milan's is rather well advanced. Most come on more slowly and don't get as far.

Here is a picture of my Tegyd. You can see the start of the jagged ring around the eyes forming; Tegyd was one of my cataract ladies she has that in the middle of the eye.

Oh, thats slightly more concerning then @Wiebke that most dont get so advanced. He is only around 3 years old and it was a speckle on the rim of his eye this time last year.. i only remember that because i mentioned it to the vet when he was neutered and she said that it is part of his cataract, so thats what we went on believing for a while. It seemed to develop slowly over about 9 months then worsen very quickly over 3 months. Poor milan has always had never ending problems. I just hope that this doesnt cause him any problems. He has also started to develop it in his other eye

My Ace had it in both eyes. It was a learning curve for me and the vet. It never bothered him and he was a happy pig.

I won't lie, Ace did have many problems and I didn't have access to a great vet, but his eyes really didn't bother him.

That photo is one of the last of him and you can see how they were bulged a lot. We made sure to monitor them alot and he had quite a few xrays. He could blink okay and his eyes didn't dry out. He was a little solidier.

I can't remember how long exactly but I think it started before he was 2 and he lived until he was 5.
