i stroked chesney before and noticed he has a boney kind of 'lump' on his rump. i say lump but it just feels more like a bone. :{

it is where they would have hips, the area to the side of the scent gland and a bit above on either side. hope that makes sense.

it is just one side and i only noticed it today. maisie doesn't have one.

he has been having more exercise lately so may have slimmed down and he is normally very chunky so may have always been there and i just never noticed. ?/

he hasn't been any different in his behaviour or eating habits etc etc.

could he have hurt himself? maybe caught his nails and pulled something?

It may just be a cyst. My piggies are prone to these and they feel like hard peas. They can get quite big in size and often burst of their own accord. Maybe best not to take any chances and get the piggie to a vet for a diagnoses.. good luck

ok, thanks. i was going to get him checked out at the vets anyway, just wondered if anyone knew what it could be. :)

could it be when he lies down? when he curls round i can feel it. :{ it would be like us sticking our hip bone out.

It's normal when they do slim down a bit to be able to feel their bones more easily; some pigs "drop" their weight lower to the ground rather than carrying it all over, so although they're not thin or underweight it's not difficult to feel the bones.

Dexter weighs over 1400g, he used to carry his weight all over but for whatever reason when he hit 2 years old it all dropped; he carries most of his weight on his sides/underside and his back feels a little bony.

I think what you're describing is normal, it sounds like the pelvis and depending on how he's sitting you may only notice one side, but if you are unsure then do get him checked out.

thanks for this :)

i only feel it when he is sleeping all curled round. i can't see anything there.

chesney is approx 3 years old now. he seems completely normal in himself, it was just that when he lay down i stroked him, and he doesn't normally let me stroke near his rump, but he did this time, and that made me notice the 'lump'

i'm not sure whether to go to the vets though, the only reason being that it takes us about 40mins each way, and chesney gets a bit scared on the journey, he rips newspaper frantically. he settles down though half way there.

i'm going on wednesday with the bunnies anyway so i could take them all.

just seems a long way and unnecessary stress if it is just me being paranoid again! rolleyes

i think i will have another check over if him in a bit and see what i can see or feel. rolleyes

checked him over and there is definitely a hard lump. it is only on one side so it can't be a bone because it would match each side wouldn't it?

it feels like a bone sticking out though, but i can feel it whatever position he is in now. could it have gone bigger in a day? :{

i'm worried now, i don't know anything about cysts or things like that. what would be done for him if it is something like that? :...

Hmm, yes I agree with Laura.
I have a boar weighing 1 kilo, which is an average weight, but his hips are very boney and his belly is wobbly~

It's not like he's a good weight all around, if you see what I mean.

ches is like this, quite podgy and chubby tum and bum! :))

it is more obvious on one side though so i think i need to get him checked out. just for peace of mind.

we have an appointment for friday. taking both buns and both the pigs! :))

we have been to the vets and i was right. there is a big lump on chesney. the vet has taken some cells from it to have a look at and we will get the results next week, after the bank holiday. fingers crossed it isn't anything bad.

he also said ches and maisie are overweight. he said most piggies they see are overweight. he said i should feed no pellets at all. and no sugary veg, just leafy greens, and hay.

all advice on the net is so different, but he is a top exotics vet so he knows best! he isn't one for feeding pelllets. he thinks hay and leafy greens is all rabbits and piggies need. basically a wild rabbit/piggy diet.

ches and maisie were so well behaved bless them. x)

really hope the lump is nothing to worry about. vet said piggies get so many lumps and bumps and the majority of the time they turn out to be nothing to worry about.

I have had to lumps removed from 2 of my boys recently and on both of them they came back as lipomas(fatty lumps) which are common.

I hope Chesneys lump is nothing to worry about :)

getting that sick feeling about chesneys test results now. find out tomorrow. hope it is nothing. but can't help feeling worried. :(

i managed to miss the vets call! mallethead

but he left a message saying that chesney has a sebaceous cyst but there are no signs of any cancer or infection. he said now we would just tend to leave it alone and monitor it. he wants to speak to me thought to talk about it as he knows i like detailed explanations! :))

It must be a great relief to have a firm diagnosis and one that's not on the too serious side. :)

it's good to know what it is. i am speaking to him today so he can explain things better. i don't really know much about them.

but he is probably explaining more because he knows i am obsessive! :))
