Bonio Biscuits?

A couple of years ago we went to our local pet store to ask them what we could give our hamster, Chester, in order to keep his teeth short. They suggest bonio biscuits (the original ones of course!) So we gave him some and he loved them.
Sadly he passed away and we gave them to our gerbils instead. Another creature who loves a good old nibble on the ol' dog biscuit.
So we decided we'd try them with our guinea-pigs and our rabbit Thistle. Seriously, Dusty and Thistle just can't get enough of them!
I feel they're brilliant to give to your guinea-pigs as they are a nice snack and keep their teeth in good order.
If your looking for an alternative to the usual willow sticks and wood chews Bonio originals are fab substitutes.

(Just don't buy the meat flavoured ones for them xD xD xD xD)
 
Bonio original composition:
Cereals (30% whole wheat), Derivatives of vegetable origin, Oils and fats, Minerals, Meat and animal derivatives.

Hamsters are omnivores so the meat part is fine and actually does them some good and they love bonio

Guinea pigs are herbivores, and that means strictly vegetarian so bonio even the original are no good for them sadly. Hay hay hay hay hay and more hay should keep their teeth down, and biscuits can be bought for small pets that have no meat in at all I should think.
 
Everyone makes mistakes :D as long as they have normal poos I wouldnt worry.

My rabbits actually managed to climb my furniture and managed to drag down a box of dog biscuits and ate the lot and were fine but id not do it again :D and have moved the biscuits higher (they were already 4-5ft up!)
 
They've only had one. That won't hurt them, will it?

What about gerbils? Are they omnivores or herbivores?
 
Probably not the meat content is very low, just keep an eye out for sloppy poos.

Gerbils are omniovores but from what ive read people dont tend to feed them meat as we know it, they usually feed insects. Though gerbils are not an animal I know much about and I have never had them tbh.
 
I'll keep an eye out. Whizz didn't have any of it and Dusty only had a tiny bit. I'll check that the rabbit's poos are ok, fortunately he has a litter tray so observation should be easy with him.
But then Dusty's poos aren't normal on the best of days. They never have been. We believe he's inbred and he well... he isn't normal... :(
He seems happy enough but he has a twisted paw, an out of line mouth, his belly button didn't close up properly and he is very skinny. He eats as much as Whizz, who is fine, but his motabolism is very fast.
 
Hamsters are omnivores and they like to eat bugs and dog treats :)

I wouldn't worry if it is just one, they are mainly just biscuit anyway. Not much meat or anything like that as you would find in other dog treats. My rabbit once grabbed hold of the box and I came into the kitchen to find her stuffing her face rolleyes she was fine though
 
Thanks you guys, you've put my mind at rest.

I'm in school and I spent the last 2 hours panicking. I'd hate to think I'd done anything to hurt my babies

Me too, (Ali) :red .... Also tried Doggie Choc drops, didn't care for them though...;)
 
Hi,,
I want to say that I recently bought some bonio pupp bicuits for my 5 month old. I noticed that instead of eating them he hides them all over the flat. Is this bad? should I stop giving them to him? he doesn't mind if I take them from him.
 
I have always given my rabbit and piggies a bonio biscuit, none so far have had sloopy poops or been poorly, YET. they only have it occasionally they also like stale crusts of bread...
 
personaly i wouldnt buy them as they are made by purina and this particular company test their ingrediants on animals, they inject them in liquid form into animals and if the animal reacts to it they wont use it
so since i have known this i have avoided anything made by them, they are as bad as P&G another company to avoid as they also test on animals still
 
I forgot my old gerbils used to love bonios. I wonder if my new ones will. My late brother was brought up during the war, and Mum used to say they gave toddlers bonio type biscuits to teeth on..:)). You used to be able to get bickie pegs for babies with a ribbon on to pin to their clothes...:)) sorry gone off thread a bit.

You can still get bikkiepegs - complete with ribbon! don't know about the bonio toddler ones though!

OMG not a good thought at all. My cats like the purina dried food - a rethink is due
