Hello, I realize I have been inactive for a long time, and the forum is looking very different then when I was here last, I would love to look around the forum and catch up on everybody's pigs, but right now I need some advice...
So my little Pumkin passed away a few weeks ago from old age, and since then Boo has been living by herself. She has seemed fine, eating, and drinking like normal, and being her loud and friendly self. But over a couple of days, she has seemed kind of dull. Her eyes have some goo around them and she seems to be loosing weight. Just a few minutes ago I was working on something when she started to scream. I thought something had fallen on her or she had gotten hurt, and went rushing over. She was lying on her side screeching. I picked her up, and now she seems alright. She is eating some lettuce, but she is very jittery. I would love to take her to the vet, but in past experiences i've token a pig in and all they have done is given some antibiotics and charged us $100, saying that guinea pigs are small animals and there isn't much to do. Has anything similar happened to someones pig? Could it have been a seizure? Thank you so much
-Annie

I realize the forum isn't an alternative to taking a pig to the vet. I would just like support, thanks :)

First of all I'm s sorry to hear about Pumpkin.

As for Boo, it does sound like it could have been a seizure but I am also concerned about the gunk. How is her breathing, does it seem laboured at all?

She does need to see a vet, where abouts in Canada are you? we have a few members from Canada on here and there is a slight chance they may be near you and know of a vet that is good with pigs. I am tagging @Freela to start with.

To be honest, the goo on her eyes could indicate some respiratory problem, which can kill when not treated with an antibiotic, but there may be something more sinister going on like a stroke or seizures, and she may have more. :(

Please have her seen by a vet for her respiratory issue and as an emergency if she is in any discomfort from more strokes/seizures, if only to release her from any suffering.

I am very sorry that you are having such a rough time!

Goo in the eyes does sound like an upper respiratory tract infection of some kind. Where in Canada are you? I can recommend some good exotics vets in the Toronto and Durham Region areas if you're in that area of Ontario. Please let me know if you're at all close to that area so I can give you some recommendations!

Thank you for your support, we don't think a vet can help Boo at this point. She is very peaceful sitting in my lap. It's nice to know there are fellow guinea pig lovers in Canada :)

A vet could help her on her journey to the bridge. Sometimes that is the kindest thing we can do for them.
