I called 2 vets this morning to find out if they neuter piggies. Found it slightly worrying that both receptionists had to check to see if they carry out this procedure on GP's which makes me think they don't operate on them that often :-\ although they were confident that they see a lot a lot of ferrets and rabbits.

The vets that I go to now for Honey don't do surgery there, but their joint practice does for £60, not sure how confident I am about them though :-\.
The vets who see our dog are really good and most people I know go to them. They carry out the procedure for just over £30!

Think I may switch my GP's to our dog's practice, its just a pain that it's further away.

Just got to book him in now :)

If you're not confident dont go there. you need to ask how many the vet has performed and how many were successful. if you dont get the answers you like have a shop round at different vets. after all you'd rather not get the surgery in the 1st place if you didnt think he'd make it through it. you're doing the right thing in looking into it but i really would ring round a few surgerys before you go ahead with it :) x

I agree with Emma, may be an idea to shop around ask on the success rates of neutering and how often they do it.. :)

i don't understand why to desex a piggy, as any surgery is risky and puts the piggy under unnescressary stress! but our vet who is not pig savy but with advice from maryh's vet took out zoe's reproductive organs and mass. for whatever reason you are getting marmite desexed hope you find a vet you trust and that all goes well. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: since our normal vet said with desexed males their stomach can fall out , i have never thought of getting piggies desexed, mind you we have girls. good luck and hugs and cuddles to marmite. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

She wants Marmite to live with her Sow which is the reason for neutering. The perfect pairing. :)

Some boars dont get on with other boys but dont like living alone, in this case if you have a good vet, neutering is the way to go, some rescues neuter males and some even females as standard. Hence why Ralfie is neutered :) some vets perform the surgery as if its nothing, other have difficulty so you really need to shop around to find the good ones! x

Tried 4 different vets, all say they carry out the procedure, none are done that often. Only one said that it carried a risk due to anaesthetic on such a small animal.
I only know of people visiting 2 out of the 4 I've called.
There are some more vets, if I pick out the equestrian ones, but I've not heard any reports about them and that would mean at least 2 bus journey's, and at least an hr and a half's travelling.

where abouts do you live? maybe somebody on here can recommend one? or is there a rescue near you who can recommend one? i think its worth travelling a bit extra for a 'better' vet :)

I live in Dorset :)
There are 2 animal rescues listed on the web that I can find in Dorset, 1 one is part of the RSPCA who wouldn't advise me and the other one is the other end of Dorset.

Checked that thread a few days ago and also asked for a recommendation on there too. Nothing remotely close to me.

i would do what you are already doing, ring around and ask all sorts of questions. here in south australia the RSPCA does desxing of dogs and cats not sure on guinea pigs as desing GP's is not a big thing here in south oz. wishing you well and hoping you find a vet who you can trust with your marmite. hugs and cuddles. :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks :)
I'm at work tomorrow so will be asking everyone there which vets they go to with their animals, there are several piggie owners too!
I have a feeling I know which vet they'll say :)

Where are you in dorset - i also live in dorset and my vet is pretty good, i've had several pigs who have had ops with them and they have all been fine, and they are very caring?

Hope you found a good vet a great article with questions to ask
http://www.cavyspirit.com/neutering.htm
also ask what kind of suture they use chromic or 'chronic' as I call it can cause a reaction in some guineas (we are dealing with one that has had it) and although it only takes two weeks to dissolve can cause complications Vicryl takes 6 weeks to dissolve but is recommended by the CCt as the best suture for cavies :)
hope this helps and good lick to the ittle guy

Jodiec, I'm in the Weymouth/Portland area.

Vikki, thanks for the link & info, V. useful :)
I'll be asking those questions too.
