Hi,

I was in Sainsbury's this morning and got a few bags of veg, I got them their basil as they love it but I also bought a bag of pea shoots, and some mixed leaves which include rocket, spinach, green balavia and red cos.

I am going to have to pick out the spinach as they have had some of that already this week but are the others safe and safe for daily use?

I'd leave the spinach in - isn't a week of it okay if you don't have it after that for a while?

I got a big bag of spinach to share round mine for however long it lasts. Try and tempt Mork into eating it.

What are pea shoots? They sound like peas that are sprouting?

It says on the bag, baby leaf pea shoots but to be honest, they look like normal leaves you would feed them...would it make them ill or would they simply just leave it?

I suppose if the spinach is combined with 3 other leaf types, there won't be that much in anyway. :)

I've seen on Google they can have pea shoots but not dried. ?/:x

I am ever so confused, yes I will wait! Thanks!

Oh yes forgot to say, I got curly kale too, how often can they have this because I know it is in their top 10. :(|)

I got it from here http://www.guineapiggalaxy.com/theirdiet.htm, I am a bit worried that they said more than 1 lettuce leaf per day can kill them, how much of the bag should I be giving them because I always fill their little dish with leaves every day. :(

I have never heard of more than one lettuce leaf a day killing a guinea pig!

Back in the seventies, our family guinea pig lived to the grand age of nearly ten years on a diet of mainly lettuce, carrot and tomato - whatever was available then when there wasn't exactly a selection in the supermarkets and nobody knew better!

Think people are over cautious with everything these days.

I thought it was only iceberg they couldn't eat...the pea shoots really do look like watercress or spinach. I am hoping they mean the same thing.

I just don't want to poison them with pea shoots!

If in doubt, feed a little bit and see whether there are problems and don't feed in big quantities..

I have tried to look it up, but haven't found anythign on pea shoots, sorry.

think my girls would move out if there was only one leaf of lettuce each per day

I have given them their 3rd portion of pea shoots and they seem to like it. :)

They really do just look like a bag of rocket or something, I read on Google they can have it as long as it isn't dried so fingers crossed it is ok!

Dried herbs or plants tend to have a higher calcium content and should there fore only be given in small quantities.

You can feed any lettuce; iceberg is the worst in terms of nitrates, and frankly doesn't taste that great to guinea pigs on those occasions when it was the only lettuce available in the supermarket. My piggies were always rather relieved if they could go back to romaine or cos lettuce!
