i was just wondering how safe it is too let my piggy hide and play n old shoe/cereal boxes with the most of them been printed on as piggys like to chew, could the ink on these boxes harm my piggy? i sorry if this is a silly question, this is my first piggy and want to make sure i give her a safe and happy environment :)

I have seen generations of piggies playing and sleeping in cardboard boxes, and none of them has ever had any health problems that could be related to chemicals.

Compared to nibbling on wallpaper (glue!), cables and plastic bags, which can be a rather unwelcome obsession with some enterprising indoors pigs, I'll have cardboard anytime! As long as you make sure that there are no plastified parts, you should be safe.

Some guinea pigs love to rearrange the furniture; cardboard boxes are ideal for harmlessly venting some hurt feelings.

Cardboard boxes and newspaper now have dyes which won't upset the digestion. Avoid plastics as piggies can eat bits of plastic which then cause internal problems - same with boxes that have a plasticised side to them. Cardboard provides roughage and fun chewing time! I normally remove them once they have been widdled on though.....

The paper bags from Primark are also great fun and make interesting crackly noises too. If you see an old woven wicker basket going cheap then they make great play loungers - a towel to cover the wickerwork inside to lie on and the wickerwork round the edges to chew while you lie there! They don't last forever and don't get painted/varnished ones though. (I think they used to serve these as 'chicken in a basket' in pubs or for chips.)

Oh yes - and watch for those huge staples in the sides of the cardboard boxes. Not good!

:D i'll be taking all the cereal packets out of there boxes now lol, thanks for the replies :) :) :)

I pick up empty boxes as I am going round the supermarket, then I keep a stock on. I use at least 6 a wheek. Sweet boxes are good. Some I line with hay or fleece and they lie in them, others I turn upside down and they hide in them. They love to nibble them too. x

The best ones are the boxes that the bags of fruit gums, jelly babies, liquorice allsorts come in. he he. xx

I'm at work tomorrow night so i'll have a wander down the sweet aisle lol :))

Do your's show much interest in the hay-stuffed toilet paper rolls? :)) I just tried this a few days ago, and it has been untouched.

What a nifty little set up! Do you keep things like a Pigloo or Hut in their home too or just the cardboard boxes?
