Hi I am reading up on guinea pigs as I am getting some in August and have done quite a bit of reading. I have just bought Peter Gurney's ( right spelling?1) book on how to take proper care of guinea pigs. I was surprised to read how he used to give his gps bread soaked in cows milk! He said it was fine as as his gps lived to a fine old age it obviously wa sok.......he knows his stuff....but before I would attempt this atall with mine I wanted to know whether anyone had tried this out? I am not sure of any nutrional value to it so what do you think?

Peter only used bread and milk for sick piggies, not as part of the diet.
I sometimes give my piggies small portions of dry bread(granary or wholemeal) as a treat.Never give them white bread.
I do not give milk to my pigs.

:) Some guineas are lactose intolerant . Be very wary when giving milk and keep a close eye on their droppings. The only time I would give it is when a sow has a large number of babies and then I use Evaporated milk diluted with water, either Mum eats it and it gives her a boost or the babies tuck in (and fall in ::) ). Mine have a hard crust of wholemeal bread occasionaly, usually when Waitrose has reduced them to 10p a loaf :)

Thank-you for your replies.... O0I always learn something new when I visit this website! :smitten:
