Hello everyone, I wondered if anyone can shed some light or had any tips to help my pig with a chronic breathing problem...

Greta is 2 years old, her weight is stable and she is generally eating well and seems content. She had pneumonia when she was about 6 months old and was very ill - I nearly lost her - but she responded to Septrin and after two weeks she was well again.

Every now and then I find her sitting quietly and her breathing appears laboured and sometimes the whites of her eyes are showing. Each time this happens we go to the vet, are prescribed antibiotics and she usually improves within a day or two. The vet thinks she has some scarring on her lungs and after her most recent breathing problems the vet prescribed metacam rather than antibiotics - Greta responded the same way and was well again within 48hrs. So the vet thinks it is probably a chronic inflammation rather than acute infection.

I found Greta struggling with her breathing again today, although eating well. She has never been a very active pig, but she is pottering about as she usually does. What would you do? I have metacam I could give her, or I could ring the vet in the morning?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you,
Ribgy (and Greta)

Sorry I didn't respond last night, have you spoken to the vet yet? if not I would give her the Metacam, but you could always check over the phone first.

I have an old boar that has scarring on his lungs due to pneumonia, and he has also has a chronic weepy eye, he has been like this for well over three years now,

Does have occasional instances of laboured breathing, but I find that 0.1ml of paediatric Sudafed Will ease the problem, as it is more congestion than actual lung !Vet said I could go as high as 0.3ml but I have always found that 0.1 ml all that is necessary
