Since getting my little Freddie pig from the rescue, I have been thinking about all the poor animals used for breeding and what sad little lives they must have. I don't have children and I would never make my animals have babies because if I don't want them and quite happy not having them, why would my piggies want babies?! It's really sad to think that I have 2 males and 2 females and I could quite easily breed them and no ones to stop me (apart from my head and heart). I couldn't do it, I don't think it's fair on the animals to do it to them. Force them to be mothers when they are quite happy the way they are.

I think the law should introduce a breeders licence for all animal breeders. So if you have one the rspca come around and check your animals randomly like once a year or once every 6 months or whatever. If you don't have a licence and you are caught selling animals then you face a fine and a ban on keeping animals.
So how I think it should work-
The breeder has to pay for the licence and is put on a register so the rspca have details of breeders (names address, what animals they breed, who they sell to).
If a buyer visits the breeder to buy an animal they have to see the licence. If the breeder cannot show the licence then the buyer must contact the rspca and police as this is illegal breeding and not buy the animal.
The breeder must pay tax on any animal they sell and must issue a receipt to the buyer with details of if it has had any injections ect. With the signature of a qualified vet.
When an owner buys an animal from the petshop, the petshop must issue a receipt (the same as the ones you would get from the breeder) and if the animal is already pregnant when the buyer takes it home, the petshop will be liable for the fine, but can appeal against it if they believe the animal was already pregnant when it came from the breeder which then the breeder would be liable for the fine. I think this would make petshops more careful about where they get their animals from in the first place and they would train their staff better if they knew a hefty fine could come their was if they mis sexed animals. So the breeder would issue a dated receipt to the petshop and the petshop would issue a dated receipt to the customer, so it could determine the dates the pregnancy occurred and who was liable for the fine.

As it stands now You can go out and buy 2 puppy Bulldogs from different breeders and breed your own, each puppy selling for £1000-2000 each! You will have no tax to pay therefore all that money is yours if you don't have them injected and just say you have some idiot would believe it and still buy the puppy anyway without proof! It's absolutely disgusting! Is there any wonder so many animals are in rescues and so many are being imported over to the uk underage and I'll to satisfy the greed of these horrible people!

The law needs to tighten up on this stuff, I saw a news headline once where a man had been sent to prison for selling items on eBay and not declaring he had a "business" to HMRC and wasn't even making that much money from it, yet these vile people make a killing off the lives of these animals and are free to keep all their money and pay no tax because it's classes as a "hobby" it's awful the law stinks. Surely the breeders licence would be good thing so me tax man can get his hands on even more money. But bet they wouldn't even consider bringing it in, so rescues are left to pick up all the pieces of these shattered little breeding machines and some of them will never even see daylight because many will die before they are even rescued! Makes me so angry that the illegal puppy trade is all over the papers and news but they never think to do anything like this! It's not just puppies who suffer it's all animals, we need better protection for animals, if a breeders licence could stop idiots home breeding or not bothering getting their animal neutered then that's more lives saved at the end of the day.

I think more needs to be done to protect them, it upsets me so much how the mums and dads have no life and the babies have health issues and behavioural issues and I think this would be a good way to start :)

I agree with you!
I also think there should be some kind of test you have to pass before you adopt an animal - the type of stuff you have to do before adopting from a rescue.
I'm really tired of people (loads of people I know) buying animals from pet shops or people who breed their pets and then not looking after them properly. It's disgusting.
I know someone whose tortoise lives in a desk drawer and it got it's nails chewed off by a rat. :(

I think if they weren't so easy to buy/breed then we wouldn't have this problem of so many in rescues, it makes me so upset that there are so many animals who have done nothing wrong in bad homes because people just got them because they had the money to buy them and don't really know/care about their needs, I bought my Frankie from the petshop because he was in a bad way and I felt so sorry for him. Even though he was the last one left and the petshop was closing down and he was reduced to £5 I still helped line the pocket of the breeder in reality, even if it was by only £5. I think we need to change the attitude of the breeders and petshops first so they know they can't use animals as money making machines and they might even care more for the animal if they were scared getting fined.

That's so sad that he lives in a drawer, my boyfriend has one and she has to have a special light in her tortoise table and has to be switched on all the time and there's also one that he only puts on for 12 hours, I don't really know much about them apart from what he tells me x

Yeah, I don't know much about them but being shut in a drawer all day can't be fun. Sometimes the people's kid's take him out and put him on top of the desk, they told me that he falls off quite often (they find it funny)
He gets fed but that's the only care he gets. It's horrible.

These people kept their hamsters outside, in an indoor cage.

They had loads of pets that they treated horribly. When I was 11 I adopted their hamsters because I felt so sorry for them.

That's why I hope that someday, hopefully soon, people won't be allowed to get pets just because they feel like it.

Poor little tortoise :( that's really sad that he has such a horrible life, I hate it when people do things like that, I feel so sorry for animals that live like this and don't get a chance of real happiness they just think it's normal.

Glad to hear you rescued their hamsters :).

There is a customer that comes into my work and he has some sort of mental disabilities (I'm not sure what) but he lives in a flat and has his carers come around every day to check on him, but he tells me all the time that he doesn't let them in and when they come around he puts his key in the door so they can't get their key in from the outside. He always has loads of animals and he says he is only supposed to have 2 pets. He has a cat called bella who he's aloud to have and the carers take to the vets and stuff for him but since I've known him he has had a puppy that he kept for a couple of weeks, and he gave away because it chewed the flat up, he's had a rat that he gave away and the person who he gave it away to killed it and fed it to their snake in front of him, he's had a hamster that he gave away to the same person he gave the rat to and they fed it to their dog in front of him again, he had a male and a female gerbil who had loads of babies and the carers took them to the local rspca. Now he came into my work again few weeks ago saying he's got 3 degus 2 female and 1 male and the females are pregnant! I really like the guy he wouldn't harm a fly but now he won't let the carers in since they took the gerbils to the rspca, I fear the degus are going to end up dead. People take advantage of him all the time like the person who he gave the rat and hamster away to, told him they were going to buy them off him for their granddaughter and ended up killing them and giving him £1 for the cage both times! I think that a breeders licence would stop thing like this happening as he is a very nice person and I know he wouldn't breed animals if it was made illegal, and I think it would protect more animals from falling into incapable hands.

I do agree that people should have to be assessed before they are sold an animal and I think places like gumtree and pets4homes should be made to ask questions about the seller.

I totally agree and would also extend the licensing to rescues.as well. After all we remember Rainbow Ark.

I'm not sure what rainbow ark is but yeah rescues included too, would be good if we could get the breeders licence turned unto a real thing but sadly I doubt the government would do it :(

Yeah, I feel so sorry for it! I'm just waiting for them to say they are giving it up and I will try to get it. I don't know anymore about tortoises than they do but the difference is, I would be willing to learn and give it the best life possible, they've had it for about 4 years and it went from living in a box to living in a drawer. :(

They had all sorts of animals.
Rabbits, that they replaced like a toothbrush. (they lived for months!)
A guinea pig, that they gave to us after about a week of owning it.
Another guinea pig, it lived in their conservatory in a hamster cage. No hay or toys, just wood shavings, not even a food bowl. They let it go in their garden (it wasn't secure) I'm not sure if it got killed by something or starved to death.
Loads of hamsters. Some of them lived in jugs on their porch and a few were in a cage in their garden. The poor things didn't have anything to do and they were freezing! I offered to buy them and they told me to just take them. One of them was pregnant but they told me it was a boy so I was confused when I came back from school and my hamster had little alien things falling out of his butt.
Ferrets, they escaped and they didn't bother looking for them.
A cat that they had for a few years, then it got ran over and it died slowly. They said it was old age but the cat was about 7 and all it needed was a vet.
Right now they have 3 guinea pigs, I know they get hay but I'm not sure about the rest of their diet. Their cage is nowhere near big enough and the poor piggies fight quite often.
They recently got a kitten. I feel sorry for it. :(
They also have a dog but the dog is lucky, it's the only animal they look after properly.

Sorry for the long list but this upsets me so much.

I feel so sorry for the poor animals you mentioned! Especially the ones that got eaten. :( I don't think people should be allowed to just give animals away like that, you just can't trust a random stranger with a life!

I hate websites where you can rehome pets. anyone can go on them and pretend they have the perfect home. I think good, trusted rescues should be the only way you can rehome a pet unless family or a friend are looking after the pet for you.
I also think there should be some type of records so that someone can keep track of the pets people have and make sure they are not breeding them.

I think it's a good idea but what about with other animals like fish? I can't prevent some of my fish breeding as you buy them young and as they mature they show what gender they are and if females of certain breeds don't have the opportunity to breed they can become egg bound and die.

It is so sad that people don't care and get pets "because the kids want it" and get rid of it " because the kids got bored" I just love animals and I hate thinking of the Guinea pigs stuck in a cage 24/7 bored out of their minds all their days turning into one, I always have them out as much as I can and when I'm at work and the weathers nice I always come home to find them out in their runs on the garden :) I'm always hoping for nice weather so they can play outside because I know how much they love it, like today I put them out and it was so warm and sunny and 10 mins later it started snowing so had a mad rush to get them in but Frankie wouldn't let me catch him and was popcorning as it was snowing, I just love them to be happy and I don't understand why other people find it so hard to make them happy it's not hard they don't ask for much.

Good on you for taking on their animals, sounds like you saved them from a sad little existence.

I hate these sites too although I got 3 of my 4 from gumtree (my latest piggy was from a rescue who advertised on there and I was checked out before I could have him and they even bonded my Frankie with him). I have an obsession of checking out the free ad Guinea pigs and messaging people telling them not to do it and to contact local rescues because it really winds me up like how can you just wake up one day and think I'm giving you away to a random stranger today!

I really wish people would take animal welfare more seriously, I understand it's hard for the rspca to go out to every call where the animals cage is too small when they are under staffed and have hundreds of calls a day but then again this should be a law that petshops and online retailers can only sell cages above a certain measurement. There's so much I'd like to change in this world concerning animals.

But I would never buy an animal from a petshop again because after getting rescue piggie Freddie and he is 5 months old and so friendly and loving it's unreal and my Frankie who I got from the petshop in December 2014 and he is still very shy and wary of me, I know something happened to him in that petshop or when he was with the breeder because he was covered in cuts and bruises and his ear is ripped in half this just shows the difference between being regularly handled and loved from a young age by the lady at the rescue, and being treated like discounted stock at the petshop it's so sad I don't know what they did to him but it has affected him x

True, this would be a lot harder to regulate, maybe if they could just check the ones intended for petshop sales to be checked, it would take years of planning to go ahead but would hopefully save some lives X

@Stayc1989 I hate the weather atm as my guinea pigs live outside and they have been trapped in their hutch since autumn :(
