cuddles

Hi there have got a older sow that has come into the rescue today.she is about 4years old.She has had a broken leg at some stage (at the ankle) and it has become a large bulge. She does not put weight on ot and hops about.
the vets tell me that as she is older and it is an older break that has fused badly we should manage her with pain relif(another to be on mediation)
does anyone have any advice?

Sounds awful but if she is managing well not using it what about amputation so she doesnt need to be medicated for life. I dont think there is much they can do as pigs are so small in a dog or cat they would break and reset it. But that is way to much for a pig. Good luck!

yes we took xrays and it has been broken and bone has knitted in a big lump.she doesnt use it and holds it up all the time so needs pain relief.we did discuss amputation but i am worried she will chew it? this is my first experience with a piggy broken leg also! so i am realy not sure what to do

If the leg is useless and causing her pain, I would discuss amputation with the vet. If the vet feels she would survive through the operation and it would be easier for her to move, then go for it.

Is it a front or a hind leg? As this also might make a difference considering the operation and terms of mobilty.

I think it's a case of weighing up her quality of life with pain management vs operation. WHich do you think would be easier for her? Maybe try her on the pain mangement for a few months and see how it goes.

Good luck! And keep us updated. :)

Totally agree. especially with last point. You can't get it wrong that way. Good luck! :)x>>

Hi thanks i will take some pics of it also.
the broken leg is a back leg.it is non weight bearing and just sort of hangs their.
on pain meds she stops lying on her side holding it up so i think it does make her happier.I am unsure as to what it would be like amputated.I wonder if anyone has experienced a pig with an amputation as it is something i have never come across

I would say have it amputated. I know it sounds a bit harsh, but it would releive the pain once and for all and be out of the way. Just got to keep an eye on it post operatively and it should all be fine. If the vet takes the leg from the hip there would not be a stump at all. This is just my opinion tho.

I hope your little one feels much better soon. Poor darling.

hi. i live in rural qld, australia.
my wife and i are fruit pickers.
with the poor season at the moment and after recently moving we have been surviving, just, of 2 days a week picking.
barely paying our rent and eating mostly what we grow.
we have 2 tribes of piggies.(male and female seperated) in a large enclosure.we dont eat them!
they provide valuable manure for the garden.
we have 15 total. we have always taken them to the vet in the past! we are not inhuman!

but, we are broke, and for 10days now we havnt been able to get to work as our 88 v6 vl calais has burnt out its"transistorised ignition module".
i cant get one anywhere in australia!

so, anyway, I'm stuck 45mins from town, with no income or even wheels.
it will be 12weeks before we are eligible for unemployment payments as we are "transisent workers"(fuit pickers).
hitch hicking to town is imposssible as the locals hate pickers.

we have a guinea pig with a broken leg, at the ankle joint, its not protruding but is swelling. it still eats, jumps around,"popcorns" and plays with the others but the swelling and deformation has increased. 2-3x size of the other leg at the ankle joint.
its a week since the injury. first 4days looked fine didnt interfere with movement but sqeeked when the others stood in it, and at times pointed at 45degerees to the body till it got in a comfortable position.

it has a small 3mm erosion on the side of the ankle that we have been spraying with detadine(iodine) solution 2xdaily.
cant feel any sharp edges under skin surface.
I'm worried about infection causing the swelling. bone necrosis is the other big fear.
i feel no soft spots. just firm swelling stating at the ankle and upto start of knee.
should i drain the ankle? if it was a horse/cow i would insert a small canula into side of joint and stitch it in place to relieve swelling and allow it drain.
i am thinking of slightly piercing the eroded part on side of foot with a sterile 1mm syringe, and applying slight pressure to see if any puss comes out.

what do you guys reckon?

i dont want to euthinase as it seems happy with its mates.

all my work mates and neighbours that i have asked have said just hit it with a brick then feed it to the dog!

not really an option as it seems happy.

advice?
i tried to put this up on the site to ask others their opinion but cant work out how to "post" a new question?
only reply.
thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings.

You piggie needs treatment! Or at least some damn strong pain relief! If your pig is not getting any its cruelty, full stop. Please dont attempt any veterinary treatment without prior knowledge or consulting a professional, you wouldnt attempt to heal a broken dogs or humans leg would you? So why a piggie!?. I would also be careful what you say on here. We are all piggie lovers and you are pushing it with upsetting some people by saying some of these things.

Either seek some proper treatment for your pet, or have it humanely euthinized. It must be in so much pain, at least get it some strong pain relief please, if you havent.
