i was doing the rounds on the guinea pigs, hoovering the poos etc out when I saw blood in the 3 girls hutch - I have seen that Emily one of the long haired nails has completley snapped off right down to the flesh. I have bathed it in salt water, but I am wondering how this happened? there are deffo no sharp bits in their hutch - a few plastic houses a wooden bridge and flat wooden toys - I have checked in the hutch but cant see anything that she could have caught it on - do i need to do anything else with her foot? I will bathe it again in the morning. She ate her cucumber as usual so she doesn't seem to be sulking.

many thanks xx

Broken nails do happen - I had it happen to one of piggies a couple of times; one of her nails broke off for no obvious reason and grew back noticeably thicker and not as hard and quite liable to breaking again (which it did once).

It didn't seem to bother her, though! Evenually, the nail quite normalised again.

Oh dear. Poor thing. I think you did the right thing to bathe it in salt water. Do that again and then just leave it, it'll grow back again.
