Can I give brokkoli to my piggies "raw" ?

sounds like a stupid question, but my thoughts went along the lines of "well humans cant eat potatoes unless they are cooked, maybe same applies to other veg aswell..."

is it save to put cauliflower and brokkoli in fresh and raw?

I thought maybe most vitamins and stuff would get lost if I cook it, so I am more inclined to give it fresh, but I didnt want to make silly mistakes :)

Never gave them either before and wanted to make sure before testing :)

Yes they all eat it raw, although I dont' think cauliflower is a good idea, the leaves of one is ok but not too many.

so, brokkoli is ok fresh, and they can have the whole lot.

and cauliflower only leaves. is the rest not good for piggies? just curious :)

thanks for your quick reply.

Yip Brocolli is best raw but not a whole tree that you buy in the supermarket. Just a few bits and maybe not everyday!
I dont' think they would eat cauliflower, and i imagie it would give them wind! ;D or even a sore tummy, i never give mine it but other people might be able to help you on that one!

A lot of my foster pigs eat both cauliflower and broccoli. Like any vegetable if they are not used to it only give them a tiny amount and VERY slowly increase the amount. A mixed variety of vegetables giving different things each day is far better for them than a large amount of one thing too often.

Some rabbits and guinea pigs can be quite vulnerable to gassy vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage type vegetables which is why people often say avoid them.

I gave mine some cauli leaves for the first time yesterday, my neighbour brought them round as we don't like cauli. Anyway, they had a leaf each and they loved it! I only gave them one leaf each, despite their pleading squeaks for more :)

Mine favour broccoli over any veg. I don't give my pigs anything I wouldn't eat & cauliflower doesn't like me - rather unpleasant side effects ? I have a vision of my girls spontaniously combusting!

Mine love broccolli, cauliflower leaves and the flower, carrots, spring greens, cabbage, celery, tomatoes, sweetcorn, parsley, romaine lettuce, apple, sometimes a little suede. The only thing they dont like is peppers ! I give them a mixed dish of what I have in twice a day.
:)

The white part of the cauliflower is perfectly ok for guineas to eat, although many don't like it, preferring the leaves instead.

Ha! I gave my boys cauliflower once and I'm sure it gave them wind because all evening I kept smelling something v strange..... :D :D :D

So I don't give it to them anymore.

They like broccoli though

Hello,

I give my 3 piggies half a broccoli as a whole in the evening. It's high in Vitamin C.
They prefer the stalk and the flower part gets eaten later on.
I think it also keeps them busy as broccoli is as a whole or half is really a "3 dimensional food" rather than carrots.
Like a Bonsai tree (mini tree) - stalk, twigs and leaves and flowers. ;)

Regards,

iris
