Hello you lovely people,
We have had a pretty bad couple of days. Bronwen (one of our two gp's who live indoors) is nearly five. we noticed she had a wet bottom friday night so gave her a wash and took her to the vet first thing Saturday. the vet noticed a lump which could be or not the issue and put her on metacam and baytril (which she has had previously) in case she has an infection. THe lump could be scar tissue from a hysterectomy she had 2 years ago or something else. We have been feeding her critical care. Last night was awful, and she looked like she was going downhill as we took it in turns to look after her through the night. By 8am she was a bit brighter but still lethargic. My main concern is that she hasn't pooped since about 5am. I have just arranged an emergency appointment with the vet at .30 when we'll probably get an xray.

Can anyone give me any more advice? we are both doing everything we can. should i try olive oil?

x

When my 5 year old girl was on meds she was the same. I was recommended getting a probiotic which worked fir her. Ask your vet for one x

No, please simply continue to hand feed her and also give her water. She will need about 120ml in little portions over the course of 24 hours in order to maintain her weight. However, that is very hard to achieve when a piggy is seriously ill. You are already doing all you can.

Ask your vet for a probiotic and perhaps a gut stimulant if he thinks that that could help when he is examining Bronwen.

Thank you for you reply. x
There are probiotics in the critical care. Just concerned with keeping on feeding her if she isn't going to the toilet. She is weeing a bit - sorry for this topic of conversation over lunchtime!

Thanks Wiebke, I will continue to give her critical care and water. Do you think she needs probiotic on top of that as Deb suggests? I just want to do everything I can - you know how much they mean to me! x

We've given Pro Biotic on top of syringe food. We have been syringe feeding our sow recently and the vet suggested mixing a pinch of pro biotic in with syringe food.

Good luck at the vets, I really hope all goes well for you. As Wiebke says, ask about gut stimulant as well - we are usuaully given Zantac.

Best wishes and I hope for a positive outcome for you.

As Guineaguy says,as vet for some Zantac - hope all goes well xx

No, any more probiotics won't do anything but add a bit more fibre. One lot is enough.

Thinking of you and keeping my fingers firmly crossed!

thank you all . Ireally appreciate you support and know you feel the same way about your little guys and gals. We have been to the vet. xrays showed some gas build up so I will be gently massaging her but she feels so frail. there was also some other mass that the vet isn't sure about so she is sending all the records to an exotics specialist in south manchester that they use. (I prefer it when they say that rather than pretend they know - unfortunately, our v specialist vet from the practice who was amazing has moved to the other side of the world). We have the first appointment at 9am so will be setting off at 7 to make sure we are there. All we can do tonight is give her the Baytril, massage and water. The vet suggested we didn't feed her much Critical Care as she isn't pooing and a bit bloated.

Any thoughts?

Will keep giving her water and massage and hope she poops, then will feed more?

Thanks so much again for your support, you are all so lovely x

Wiebke, I've tried replying but your PM quota is full! Obviously given lots of advice x

I'll clear it out again now. The piggy transport I did yesterday involved a lot of messaging.

Sad news I'm afraid. I stayed up all night cradling Bronwen (black and white in my avatar) and she just deteriorated even more. We had a lovely bonding time and she managed to nuzzle a little bit to say goodbye. After hubby had a little cuddle this morning, we put her on her own as we thought she was hanging one just for us. Within 10 minutes she had scampered over the rainbow bridge to join Crempog (the brown one in my avatar) As you can imagine, we are both devastated. Thank you for all your advice and kind words. I really appreciate it x

Eira, our other guinea pig, will be getting lots of cuddles over the next few days (nothing new there!) x

I am so very very sorry, brought tears to my eyes as it sounded just like my Bertie. He stopped eating and pooing, I gave him a drop of liquid paraffin and that started things moving. I was giving him cc and pro for 48 hours, but that last night I looked into his eyes and there was no sparkle left. I am sure Bertie and your lovely piggie are scampering together and are in no more pain. Hugs for you xxxxx

I have only just read through this thread, and am so very sorry that you lost your piggie. It's such a heartbreak when they go, but it sounds as though you were able to have a special goodbye with her. Rest in peace little Bronwen. x

I am ever so sorry for your loss. It is so tough when you come to the point when all you can do is simply being there and make it as comfy and easy on a beloved piggy while your own heart is breaking. You have cared for Bronwen (and Crempog) so well!

Popcorn free with your mate Crempog again, Pogwen!

I am so sorry you lost your special girl. You did all you could for her and loved her so much.

hi there sorry wee bronwen is so poorly i got told from a guinea pig vet to give natural yogurt, it is a great source of probiotic no flavouring, i use the rowan glen yogurt, mine love it, and give 2ml twice daily, Baytril is so hard on the stomach that piggies even rabbits will stop eating, i prefer septrin as it is less harmful and smells of banana.

as for bloat i use infacol, baby meds to calm down colic, or bloat as we know it use 0.3ml twice or three times daily this should clear up bloat, ask vet for fibreplex to help the digestive system, and ask for critical care, hopefully all this combined will make her feel better.

bronwen * are in my thoughts little one xx
