hi
My coronet boar Bertie won't let me brush him ::) i think it's because he didn't get used to it at a young age. When he was born he had short hair (obviously LOL! ) and it didn't really grow till he was quite a bit older.
Anyway he just runs away and i do it gently and everything! He likes cuddles so it's not that he doesn't like being handled.
do you have any tips? :)

Cookie doesnt like being brushed either ::) i give her cucumber when i brush her and it keeps her occupied for 20 seconds ;D

My peru sow wont let me near her hair as i usually cut it all off so she knows me now ;D ;D but when i brush her she kicks me and everything lifts her leg up and runs away ::)

I need some tips myself :D :D

merry and rosie are quite laidback, but if you have him on your lap, just stroke him and massage around the neck and ears, that relaxes them, then introduce the brush slowly ;D thats my own tip

I'm having trouble with merlin my peru, but he has the added isue of skin problems, so he flinches and squirms at the slightest touch.

his hair gets matted really easily, so as much as i hate to do it i use a firm hand, and hold him with one hand, while i groom him with the other.

but i suppose this wouldnt work with bigger fatter pigs ;D

well yeah i can hold him in one hand but her squirms out and runs away :tickedoff: ;D ;D ;D ;D :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I have three hairies-only one of which is happy to be groomed. And shes a Texel so doesn't require much grooming at all!

The two Shelties are a nightmare, i find a bribe works (usually cucumber) but as someone mentioned that acts as a distraction for 20 seconds!

I lifted one of their back legs to trim around the bum and the little weed on me last time!

;D ;D sorry that made me laugh ;D

I usually put my whole hand under their body to hold them still. To do the backend I usually support while they stand on their front legs firm but not hurting them obviously. For bathing I stand them on their back legs and do them, or just hold them under the tap so the water washes over them. Using a conditioning shampoo (like Posh N Go) minimises stress because you don't need a conditioner and it conditions the coat sooo wel when used regularly.

Molly Texel was here from 5 wheeks old and only had a bit of coat, she was well handled and groomed regularly but never ever settled to being good ::) Others who have come in as rescues have been much easier. I think you have to be calm and confident and careful :) So I don't think age/rescue/ breeding has a lot to do with it myself :) I've had lots of other pigs from Molly's breeder who have been fine ::)

thats how i do merlins hair karen, how you described. i have to keep a firm hold though as he flinches and squirms so much.

gonna invest in some posh and go for him this week for him when i put my GG order in :smitten:

thanks karen thats great O0 will try, i am always gentle and he is well handled but he just won't. anyway i'm sure he'll get used to it cos i try to do it every day :) Yeah i bath them like that. oh might invest in some posh n go then cos i have 2 long haired ones and it would make it less stressful. thanks for the tip. I usually use just for boars on him, as he's my only boar ;D
