Specialist Bullying An Injured Pig - Scurvy

I'm after some help. I have recently had one of my pigs to the vets with a bad front and back leg. After an x-ray it was decided this pig had a Vitamin C deficiency. Vet explained it some times just happens and was not down to his very good diet. So we have him on suplliments in the cage with the other pig. Problem we are having is that the dominant pig is not leaving the poorly one alone and mounting him every chance he gets Causing him distress. Vet said it may not be a good idea to spereate them as reintroduction could be as difficult, help is needed.

Can you put up some sort of barrier - just while your poorly pig gets better. That way they could be seperated but stilll talk to each other.
 
Hi! Could you just put a see-through grid between them and just give them time to interact a few hours a day to keep the impact down?
What gender and age are the guinea pigs in question? Mounting is part of the dominance, especially with boars and especially if they are newly bonded.

It's beeM a manic couple of days, we put a partition between them and that seemed to sort it. We have now removed it and they seem as close as ever.

The only problem now is that the GP is feeling a lot worse. Doesn't move to get food or drink.

Had him back to the vets and he's on antibiotics due to a suspected joint infection, he's looking very sad. If hes no better by tomorrow he's going to be admitted. So worried about him.

Flash is about 1 years of age male and Patch is also 1. Flahs's health has went downhill quite rapidly, being monitored by us and the Vet, hope he pulls through.

Update on Flash. He's eating a lot more now, fresh, pellets & Critical Care mixture, his weight is increasing but quite slowly. He's still got an issue with one of his hind legs. It's not broken so the vet seems to think it's Vitamin C deficiency, tried the Vitamin C in his water which he seems to not like which I did read some where that this was the case. Any other ideas on Vitamin C?
 
You could try and sprinkle bit C pro biotic powder onto his fresh food before he eats it.

Take your dominant well piggy out for a cuddle and give him a treat to nibble on so he doesnt feel left out and when flash is on his own put a bowl down with afew fresh leaves and sprinkle the powder on them.

We give scruff our girl the powder in the same way. She's normally so happy to be getting her fresh treats that she doesn't notice she's eating the powder too!

With putting it in the water the cut c deteriorates very quickly and often you are just changing its taste with no real health benefit.

We get our vit c probiotic from pets at home, it's a vet ark brand and is only about £4 a tub - which lasts for ages!
 
Agree with Alanaf, otherwise you could syringe it then you know exactly how much he is getting.
 
Hi All,

Thank you for your very kind advice but unfortunately Flash was put to sleep yesterday due to a number of Medical Issues. The Vet Surgeon advised us that he was in a lot of pain and the fact that he had been on Antibiotics and pain killers for 3 weeks she could not see it getting better. He had completely give up on eating and was loosing weight rapidly. It was the hardest decision my family has had to make and has left a very large gap in our lives. Due to Flash and Patch we have seen the light that Guinea pigs can shine in your lives.

May he popcorn forever with his fellow Guinea's across the Rainbow Bridge.
