Hi All,

I noticed a couple of week ago that one of my sows had Red back feet, not on the actually foot where the nails are, it's Red on what I would call the flat ankle bit?!?!

I put my finger on them to see if they were hurting her, and she didn't react. This went away in a day or so. I noticed last night that they were red again. When I say Red, I mean that they look like they are sunburnt! No sores, dry skin, ulcers, swelling or scabs.

I checked my other sow and her feet are fine.

The only thing I had to hand last night was a Bepanthen, so I put some of that on the Red bits (although I pretty sure she probably rubbed it straight off on the fleece!)

Is there anything else I can do, and what should I watch out for?

Thanks in advance :) Alex

Hi Alex,

From your description I think you mean the hocks. What you describe is neither bumblefoot nor allergy, to some degree a little redness in the hocks is normal. Hocks that are constantly red can be seen as being sore. Common causes tend to be slight urine scald, sometimes related to a cystitis problem, a fungal infection or inappropriate bedding.

I have had success treating sore hocks with Perfect Paws ointment from Gorgeous Guineas, two weeks I applied it for before the hocks were back to normal. Bepanthen is suitable, and I would stick with that if you're happy to. Apply it 2x daily for five days on this 'trial' basis, see if it helps any, if it leads to improvement then I would continue it for a further week.

Thank you so much Laura!

I was worried that it may be the start of something nasty, and you have put my mind at rest! I will look into getting the Perfect Paws ointment just so I have something handy if it flares up again. Bepanthen will have to do for now.

Oh Hocks, that's a better name for them! Haha :red

Thanks again :)

Are the 'Hocks' the flat bits that touch the ground as the piggy walks?

We noticed one of our pigs has red feet last night, No scabbing by the paws or crustiness. Just redness on the flat part, she doesn't seem to be in any discomfort when walking - but they do look very red.

Also it's only affecting the back feet not the front. Is this common with Urine Scalding? Will get some of the Perfect Paws ointment and try it.
