I've made a mistake and recently purchased burgess blackcurrent pellets for my boys without researching the ingredients. They have been on these in the past and loved them so I bought some online a few weeks ago. I have only just researched them and found they are not very good for piggies as they contain mollasses. I currently have 4kg of them- do you recommend that I change their food immediately or will they be okay to finish the 4kg before swapping?
 
Id be interested to know this too as I recently purchased a bag on the advice of someone who used to keep guinea pigs she stated It was one of the best about? I just took her word for it and assumed because of the price being at near the top end it was a better brand luckily I only bought a 2 kg bag so can swap more or less straight away if someone could recommend a better one.
 
My piggies get a mix of the mint ones and the black currant ones to liven the boredom! One cage eat the mint ones first and the other cage eat the black currant ones first. Never had any problems with them

if they like them then you'd be fine to continue feeding them. they're not the best pellets i don't think, and have been known to cause tummy issues in some, but then again most pellets aren't great. so aslong as you're feeding a small amount then they should be fine :)
 
I've heard people say that the tesco and Asda pellets are good I don't mind I i have to pay more for a good quality pellet but if the Tesco or Asda are just as good I may consider swapping to one of these especially as I have an Asda 5 minutes away if anybody could advise please thanks x
 
I think most pellets on sale are on a similar level to burgess in that they contain molasses or other such sugars etc. Mine were absolutely fine on burgess for a year or two but now I feed supreme science selective.
 
i buy P@H home brand, burgess mint, burgess blackcurrant, and supreme science all mixed together to give them a variety, and have to say the blackcurrant ones they don't like too much…..they eat them eventually but only when every other pellet has been hoovered up

Mine hated the mint ones but love the blackcurrant ones an I have never tried pets at home nuggets as it is cheaper for me to get burgess
 
Mine are on Burgess mint which they like. I often see one of them sitting at the bowl chomping away. I asked the breeder what she fed them and she just said Burgess excel nuggets. It was only when I went to buy them I realised there was different flavours.

I read you shouldn't feed mixes to avoid selective feeding. However I'm guessing it would be ok to mix pellets?
 
I mix pellets all the time for my piggies for a bit of variety (plus I got given a 20kg bag of pellets from my next door neighbour so I need to use those up). I feed mine science selective as there is no added sugar. But have fed pets at home own brand, Tesco pellets and burgess (though they hate the blackcurrant ones). I am very impressed with the science selective pellets that I get plus they are a great price at £21.99 for a 10kg bag form amazon.
 
The only food I'd heard to avoid was Gerty as I was told it was a common food for G.Pigs that got bladder stones (not sure how true that is). I didn't know what to get so got Burgess Blackcurrent (which they hate as they were previously on muesli) so also got PAH muesli with vit C. I leave their bowls until they have eaten most of it thus not allowing them to just select the tasty bits but I am definitely going to try Science selective next.
 
mixing pellets is good, as although a selection theyde get the goodness whichever they eat…..whereas with muesli they would only eat what appeals and lack nutrients

:D That is interesting about the Gerty food. (It is not mentioned much on here.) I used to feed that when I started keeping guineas nearly 20 years ago. Most of my piggies in those days never reached their fourth birthday. It was brought out in pellet form a few years ago. Does anyone feed the pellets?
 
Mine were not keen on the burgess mint but the love the harringtons they eat every last one , though I do give them a measured amount , I did buy the allen and paige 20kg of it I have been mixing it to get rid of of they only eat certain bits out of it ,it is sticky which is the molasses apparently , hence me not ordering it again , they never eat the carrot bits in it which look the tastiest part! But I heard molasses is not good , but it's too make it more palatable I heard ,why is it bad are they all made with molasses?

My pigs are on the Tesco pellets. They are cheaper and they love them!

I bought some science selective and the girls seem to like it! So now I have something I can mix in for variety! Thanks for the advice.
