I'm still very much a newbie, so when I went to go buy a hay bag recently, turns out most of it was all stalks! I initially thought it wouldn't be too much of an issue since it's just hay, and there were leaves as well, but turns out that they don't really eat a lot of the stalks and they had a lot left over. My dad thought they were just being picky so he said to leave it, but looking it up, they have a harder time eating it. They also started drinking a lot more water from eating it. My mom even got a splinter from grabbing some of it (fortunately I got it out for her). We bought a new bag now, and it seems a whole lot softer with a lot less stalks. Going to be balancing them out now since we have two bags for them to munch on. On the bright side, at least we won't have to buy a bag for another while!

My two only ever eat the stalky stuff, I'm not convinced they believe me when I tell them the softer stuff is actually hay.

Haha really? It's so interesting that they have different preferences like that! I wonder if it's a shared preference since they are with each other all the time?

Well, they both eat it with gusto - thankfully. Last thing I need to be doing is buying two lots of hay because one demands stalky timothy and the other will only eat meadow hay lol. I remember the first order with Happy Hay I got some hay samplers to try out too and they both reacted the same way. Meadow and crau hay got sniffed at and ignored. Orchard and rye grass got nibbled a bit, then ignored. Oat and stalky timothy? Devoured in seconds.

Just wanted to say, a hay splinter doesn't necessarily correlate with stalky hay. I reached into a nice soft bag of timothy the other day and came out with a splinter between the first and second joints of my index finger. It was a devil to get out being so soft and flexible.

My girls love variety in their hay. Their hay bin always has at least two or three bags of hay in it (timothy, orchard, and meadow).

Good to know! Guess it was just an unfortunate coincidence then!
