This could be a wholly idiotic question. I'm new to C&C cages, I've always been curious. I've used home made hutch-style or hutches for my past piggies or those 4ft by 2ft indoor cages for a single boar once. I'm curious about using a C&C cage because of the prospects of giving not only space but portable, customized space, however I have a dog (border collie), who typical to her breed would interfere or possibly harass the piggies if she could get in. Is there a way to have them with lids? I wanted an indoor option for my piggies should the weather get too cold and things.

If it is a thing, please could I see your images too?

MVIMG_20201014_163520.jpg Hi this is my cage that I purchased for £35 from Amazon you can make it any design you like and you can attach the grids to form a lid going all the way across. I have only done half of this to stop by boar jumping over the fence. I would say it's quite secure but I don't know 100% if it would keep a big collie out if it jumped on top and wasn't secured properly. I wouldn't want to take the risk, I would make sure that the door is closed all the time and potentially put a stair gate across the door just incase you leave the door open. It's so easily done! Best if luck! :)received_1210316922669808~2.webp

I love the set up so much!

Yeah, I did wonder about structural integrity with C&C's...as I said I was curious and wanted to give it a go if I could since they look so cool and the custom part of it just being whatever shape-style you needed for any room. Perhaps I will just have to built a hutch-style one with dimensions suited to piggies.
I'd have to lock the door with a lock as my dog can open doors too. She's one of those intelligent collies. I call her a raptor, because when she opens closed doors the handles move like that raptor scene in Jurassic park.

I'd really recommend them they are such good value and they provide you with so much adjustable space. You can also make a second story. I would say they are secure but I'm probably being a bit overcautious but would not want to test it with a dog!

You can use grids to make a lid, but if it is wider than 2 grids (ie 4x3, 5x3 etc), then you would need some form of support. Otherwise they will flop in the middle. I don't think a lid of grids would be strong enough if a dog jumped on it though.

Could you use a child safety gate to keep your dog out the room the pigs will be in, or put a safety barrier around their cage?

What about if the grids were overlapped? I can’t remember where I saw something similar. To be honest I would use support grids even if it was 2 wide.

I used to have a lid on my old 2x4 playpen/cage
The picture below is how it was made. The lid sat on top of the side connectors when it was closed and was stable.
Being a 1x4 section which opened made it easy to manage and then no need for support bars as the back row of fixed grids do it for you. You could of course just hinge it right from the back of the cage so the whole thing opened and not have the fixed back row of grids but you’d probably want a support bar then and it might make it less stable and could make it slightly less easy to open as it’ll be a bigger area
