Cage space

I had to rehome some piggies 6 years ago,I had too many...30 at the time.i could not say no,when someone kept offering pigs.i realised it was too much ,and rehomed to a recommended rescue, all sows.i was just relieved that I knew that they would all receive good care.it was hard, but helped me at the time.now I know my limit, and try to get all my piggies from rescues.you are doing a brave act,and putting the welfare of your piggies first.hugs to you.
They're the most cute and loving creatures and you taking them in was one act of love and then sending them to a rescue for their benefit again was another act of love. I appreciate your story, will help me knowing a lot of other people have had to do the same for the benefit of their guinea pigs. I will always put them first.

Hi again everyone,

Do any of you have any suggestions of the best rescue centres for guinea pigs in South Wales (e.g. Cardiff, Swansea) or close to South Wales (e.g. Bristol). If I give them away I would want them to go to the best out there so I can be sure they are going to be in the best hands possible. Or if you have the link to the rescue centres as I can't find it in the forum. Thank you!

Worth bearing in mind that many of the piggies on this forum that live in luxury (including mine) came from the very same rescues found on the approved list. So they will likely firmly land on lucky paws with a great future.

Thank you for the reassurance!

I’ve not really got anything else to add just to echo the previous posters reassuring you that a good rescue centre will hopefully pair your single boars up and find them a happy home. Our boys are rescues and totally spoiled.

It sounds as though you have the space to offer your boar pair a lovely big home and I’m sure they’ll be happy and well cared for and loved by you. I hope you find someone to help with your singles and don’t feel bad as you’re doing the right thing by them even if it’s tough for you.

Thank you! It does help knowing I am doing the right thing because I'm not sure anymore.

If I keep the pair and then they start fighting or don't get along so well anymore, would you suggest taking them to the rescue too?

If, and it is a big if, their bond breaks down the they too would need to be split up and live in separate but side by side cages if you were to keep them. But do remember most boar pairs make it together quite happily.

If, their bond breaks and you can’t keep them living as separated but side by side piggies, then you would have various options and of course which one you went for for be entirely your decision
- you could surrender them both to the rescue, they would be rebonded with other piggies and rehomed.
- keep one of them, surrender the other. The one you keep, could be bonded with another piggy (whether that is via boar dating or being neutered and bonded with a sow) and youve then got a happy pair.

but, as I said, please don’t dwell on the possibility of your pair breaking down as it might not happen.

I think having a big cage will help your boar pair, ours started in a 160 ferplast cage but get along better now we’ve extended it. Our boys had a troubled phase when we first brought them home and occasionally grumble at each other but generally get along well.

Okay, thank you again for your advice!

Thank you! Yeah all four got along so well at the beginning, could cuddle up together and everything. They just seem to get on each others nerves, fighting or chasing to hump them non stop.
