I had a guinea pig once before, and he was perfectly fine to be alone, and I honestly think he preferred not to be around other guinea pigs. He died in early October, and I got a new baby on November 19. He's been great, but he's developed a bad habbit. And who knows, he might not continue doing this, but two night ago at maybe 3 A.M or so, he started calling for me. It woke me up, but it only lasted a couple minutes, and I was able to get back to sleep fine (I should mention that in the daytime he's quite the talker, but nothing like this). Tonight the crying started almost as soon as i got to sleep, which was around midnight, and i dont think it stopped until a few minutes ago when i woke up. I played with him for a few minutes, and then put him back, and as soon as I did he resumed crying. Now I have him on my lap, and he's still being quite the chatterbox, but nothing I'd be concerned about. I know this is a sign that he's lonely, and normally that would just mean a cage companion, but I don't have money or space for a bigger cage, so are there any susubstitutes that would work instead? Like a little stuffed animal, or something. I love him greatly, and even not though I play with him a lot, I don't want to be getting up at 3 A.M, and never putting him down. Please respond quickly, the happiness of my little Albert Lee is in your hands.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Guinea pigs are herd animals so even the ones that cope well on their own are likely to be lonely if kept on their own. Unfortunately there will never be a substitute for a companion, imagine trying to live your life never seeing another human being but being given a mannequin to talk to. It might look similar, you might be able to hug it but it would not be a good replacement for contact with a real human being.

I really don't know what to suggest for you as it sounds like he does need a friend

Hi & welcome to our friendly forum,
Your little boy is desperate for a friend. Re a soft toy, would that help you if you were lonely. Can you put your location. On your profile, I may be able to help you or someone. Am I right in thinking you need a cage?
The other thing is if you leave him alone he could go off his food & pass away. If you can't find a piggy, could you give him up for adoption. I feel for him & you.
If you know someone close to you, we can talk through them l guess your a minor & mum quite rightly has said not to put your location in.

Hi! Thank you so much for the fast and kind responses! Tiamolly123, I would most likely be able to get a new cage, but it would be hard to find a place to put that cage in a small home that's already crowded, but if you have ideas for how I could squeeze one in they are much appreciated. Also, I wouldn't give him an adoption, but only because I live in a town where if you do so he'll probably end up worse off then if I kept him.

Welcome to the Forum.

Your little boy is still a baby, and would really benefit from another guinea pig friend.
He sounds very sweet, but also very lonely.

I am sure we can come up with a way to help you though.
Firstly what area do you live in (just roughly - e.g. State or County)?
This will allow us to give you information that is specific to your country.

If you could tell us the size of his current cage and maybe post a picture of your set up, then this would help too.
I know a lot of members that have a smaller cage have managed to add more space by putting a permanent play pen area on the front or side - would that be a possibility?
Or joining 2 cages together can work too?

Hello, all. Thank you for kind responses and such, but it has recently come to light that he was calling out in pain. It looks like he has a kidney or bladder stone. I have called the local vet, and unfortunately they do not have proper certifications to perform surgery, and even if they did, I don't think I could afford it. They say that in the case that is a UTI they can give him antibiotics. I am still thinking it over though, because in the case that it is not, it would be a lot of money to spend. If anyone has anything else to say, it is all greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time this morning.

Try the antibiotics, if that doesn't clear it up then I would recommend an xray to check for a stone? Can I ask where you are located please?

Throw the telly out. Only joking
How much height, length, & width have you got, maybe I could suit a cage to what you've got, or if you could measure the room it's going, or even photos would be great. We had 2 cages that we took off the ends used tie thingys to keep to together then put a medium log roll over the the plastic base. My piggies loved that little bridge.

I agree with Lee, make sure he gives him metacam as well, if he's given Baytrill it does reduce they appetite. Is there a PDSA near you. A vet that doesn't operate mmmm. If you could find a cavy savvy vet it will be great. If you go to the vet locator in the green bar, put in your postcode & it will tell you the closest vet. If you also put your location on your profile it gives us something to work towards. Can I ask where you got your baby from.

It looks like he passed the stone, and he's doing really well! He ate, drank, pooped, and peed this morning, and he's super active!
