i read on the first aid kit list from the Cambridge Cavy trust to have children's calpol, nurofen and sudafed ? ? ? What! would you give guineas that? What for?

And also would you give them Complan? What for?

Sorry if these are stupid questions :D :D :D

As you know, when medicines are tested for humans, they usually use guinea pigs to test them on... Well... even though I am against animal testing, the animals should benefit from it too.

Calpol is used as a painkiller for guinea pigs like it is for humans
Nurofen acts as an anti-inflammatory - same as humans
Complan is milkshakes, soups, or cereals. Humans use these for people who are not eating a lot as it's a good source of protein, energy and is rich in essential vitamins and minerals, (Taken from Complan website)

Do not use these medicines if you don't know what your doing. The best thing to do is to contact Vedra on 07721026401 who will indicate the dosage and which medicines to give guinea pigs. A good book to get is Piggy Potions by Peter Gurney as it names all the human medicines you can use for guinea pigs with doseage for certain illnesses however I would still recommend you contact Vedra first.

There are a quite a few medicines intended for humans you can give to all sorts of animals, including guineas. They all act in the same or similar ways as they would if a human was to take them. However, you have to be 100% sure how to use them, like squeakypigs has said, 99% sure isn't good enough. :)

Don't give Nurofen unless you REALLY have to, it can be very bad for their stomachs, I never use it on mine. Rimadyl is better :) Calpol is OK in an emergency, but not the best one. Sudafed is useful but better to go to a vet and get Bisolvon and get them checked over at the same time. It is illegal not to take a sick animal to the vet, and treatment in an emergency (non- invasive) is the only recommended one.

Complan can be used as a build up food but does not contain the fibre a guinea needs, most cases where guins aren't eating will need Critical Care/Recovery.

There is a lecture that compliments these recommendations and its best to go on that first, I presume they're still going?
