My eldest sow Willow (almost 2 years old) has been acting very out of character for the last week, when it started I assumed she was just in season, since she is the boss of the herd she was doing the obvious, normal dominance behaviours, rumble strutting and mounting etc. However she is still doing it now, a week later, normally this stops after 2-3 days, she just seems to be very generally grumpy.

I saw what looked to be blood spots in the cage when I cleaned out yesterday, I immediately suspected Willow, so I got her out by herself and waited until she peed on a white towel, and sure enough there is blood present in her urine, so she has a urinary tract infection.

The hormonal behaviour made me think she has ovarian cysts, but ovarian cysts shouldn't cause blood in urine, right? And a UTI from what I understand doesn't cause hormonal behaviour, so I'm just wondering what could be wrong, unless she has both at the same time, or maybe feeling generally rubbish from the UTI is causing her to be stroppy with her cagemates? The latter is my assumption but I wanted to hear what others think.

I have her in the vets on Wednesday, but I have another sow on septrin for a UTI currently, would it be wise to give Willow the same meds until then or is it best to leave her be?

TIA

Hi! Please have your girl checked for ovarian cysts or problems with the reproductive tract. Ovarian cysts can cause bloody spotting, so that is an angle you'd better have your vet look at and exclude after an examination rather than dismiss a priori. Reproductive problems can be misdiagnosed or show up first by reactions in the urinary tract.

Thanks Wiebke, I will for sure as the hormonal behaviour is very odd and worrying!

I guess and it is only a guess - like humans a really bad UTI can cause behavioural issues, disorientation etc. It's worth a thought.

My Ellie was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst after persistent recurring uti's.
They cleared up with antibiotics then came back shortly after the medication was finished.

Ellie's usually seemed to be more concentrated/undiluted bleeding.

She was around 6yrs old &considered too old for a spay- she had 2 lots of 2 hcg hormone injections &they sorted her out. She was never particularly hormonal/stroppy it was the uti's that led us to the ultrasound scan &found the walnut sized lump cyst.
