My guinea pig loves being held, I have had the idea of taking him on a walk down my road (I live in a small town so there isn’t a lot going on) of course I would be alert

I wouldn't advise that. They are prey animals and would be most likely petrified. I think it's kindest to let them run around, sleep and eat in their own home, like what every piggy does!. They should really only be taken out for vet visits and grass time in a run in warmer weather.

I'm not sure piggy would enjoy it. They are herd animals and instinctively stay with their guinea pig family. They don't like going into new areas as they feel safer near their hiding places. If he gets loose, you will have great difficulty recapturing him as they run very fast. They are too nervous to be trained like dogs. When guinea pigs go out, they move about in a herd and the senior guinea pig leads the way. They stay near their hiding places where they know there is safety and don't like going into new areas. It would be better to make him a nice secure play area at home. They need to eat all the time, so travelling about would not be good for them.
