Ever since we lost our pig Frenzy last summer to complications from maloccluded teeth, I find I worry a lot about the state of the teeth on our other piggies. I'm wondering if there is any way to check their molars on my own at home, to check for signs of overgrowth without having to run them to the vet for peace of mind. I can check their front teeth easily, but have no clue how to get a clear peek at their molars- is there a way for an owner to safely see the back teeth, or is this strictly a vet visit issue?

You can buy a dental kit from the cavy cambridge trust ( though the pdf downloads aren't working for me)

However, I personally feel that you need to be shown how to use the equipment safely as there have been incidents of things going horribly wrong using the equipment. I don't really see how you can see into the back of the mouth without using something to keep the mouth open. I think laura who is on here has a set of them so if you decide to purchase them you could look to see whether there is a thread showing you how to use them?
