Is it safe to store the hay I get at the pet store or Walmart (brands like Kaytee hay-i do research into the hay I buy because I've heard a lot of bad things about Kaytee hay and where you buy it from) in a plastic container with a lid?

It depends where you are keeping it - if the container is lidded, air won’t circulate and if it’s in a warm environment, condensation can occur and cause the hay to get damp and mouldy.

That's what I thought but when I researched it someone said Kaytee hay is dry so mold is unlikely and not a concern. Would putting the lid down but not closing it be enough or maybe propping the lid up?

All hay is dry anyway but it all has the potential to go mouldy if moisture is introduced and air flow is reduced.
You could try keeping the lid propped up and see how things go.
My only other thought would be that hay is best kept in a dark place otherwise it tends to yellow, so a clear plastic container wouldnt necessarily be conducive to that.

Thank you! I'll see if I can find a dark container and see what happens.

if only a small amount, a wash bag would be big enough, the kind you use to wash small items. The holes are small enough to stop leakage. I buy farm bales and keep in wheelie bins.

I also made a bale bag out of an old shower curtain, with a cord threaded through the loop holes .to help stop the mess when transporting them.

That's what my Mum did when she transported straw bales for the hens and ducks. Unfortunately I didn't pick up the sewing gene from my Mum who could make and mend anything with a sewing machine.
